Backfiring

there are two wires that plug it at tha top of the carbs, closest to the chaincase side of sled. to by pass tors you unplug both and plug them in to each other. plug the 2 from the sled, the other 2 are attached to the carbs. you do not have to cut into any wires or solder any thing anywhere. the 2 wires have male and female ends and plug into each other.

Grader, I think I know which ones you are talking about. I actually did try that last night. When I plugged them into each other, though and turned the sled on, I didn't notice anything different. So, I assumed I didn't have the right ones. Maybe I did and shouldn't notice any different sound or anything (unless specifically testing the TORS with my finger wedged between handlebar and throttle to see if it only revs to 3k)? I talked to Simons CPR today and they are going to send me a new carb ring. He did say that if I didn't have all four on with the filters that may allow a difference in air. Unfortunately, I'm riding tomorrow and won't get the ring until after. Oh well, I can at least see if it makes a difference just by the tightening I did to the filter on the carb last night. The weather needs to start cooperating better, though or I might not be testing it for awhile.

Well, I was over at snowaddict garage working on my apex tonight and after I finished I looked at his RX1. Since I am the one that installed the ECP and clutch kit, i'm to blame for the backfiring. I'm only a human back yard mechanic LOL. I'm 100 percent sure I found the problem. When I raised the needles 1 notch I was afraid of breaking the slide by pushing the little plastic cap that holds the needle in place (just above the little spring). Anyway, on the #2 carb the little cap was just laying in there. So I pushed it down tight then resynched the carbs. It should run great on the next trip.

son of a ....

I tried it out again last Friday and everything was going great until a few miles into the ride bang. That damn thing backfired again! We stopped to get some gas and the others made comments about how great the trails were. I said I cannot even enjoy it when all I do when I'm riding it sit and worry about what the hell is wrong with this piece of (insert explictive.) I was p.o.'d to say the least. :die Then I thought what the hell my only option left is to unplug those wires and see what happens. Another 194 miles later.....not one backfire (fingers crossed, while knocking on wood.) I'll tell you those miles were the best yet so far without the added worry. I would however, like to figure out how to adjust it properly so the function of the TORS is as it should be. Onto the next problem, though. Sled only tops out barely touching 10k rpm. I'll start another post on that later. Thanks for pointing out the TORS issue. I'm hoping for many worry-free rides to come.

I have a 03 also and have had this problem once , I thought I got bad gas (still dont know ) and also tried the dioelectric grease in the sparkplug caps , never did it again?

Does anyone have the adjustment specs and procedure for the TORS? I have test equipment, but don't know the spec, or do you use the tach like a motorcycle? I guess I can call my dealer and have them fax the info over. We will get the ol RX purring yet snowaddict. Other than the clutching and the one back fire it had to run better with that needle functioning properly?

purring

Rob, other than that the sled runs great. It's day and night difference out of the hole from stock. Mid range is better as well. No black smoke upon start up either. Dream meter said 110 while topped out at 10k. Wonder what it'd read if I was actually in the power band? I have a call into Simon CPR and to the Speedshop for input as to the RPM problem. Would like to see what they suggest. Thanks again for the help.
