On the lower bearing of the chain case the manual said to install the bearing with the seal towards the chain. Is this common practice and or correct? The original equipment replacement has only one seal. Thanks

Hi,
If there's only one side of the bearing that is shielded, and your talking about the seal on the lower bearing for the track drive shaft, that seal should face the tunnel or track drive cogs, otherwise the race & roller balls of the bearing are exposed to the elements with no lubrication. The open side would be facing the chain case cover allowing the bearing to be lubed by the chain case oil.

Pretty sure the it's the opposite? Been discussed on here many times, and although it seems backwards, I believe the seal faces into the chaincase?
Google/search it, ask in the General or Apex sections or check this TY Tech link out.

Another maybe?

Guess I don't understand the question. I'm pictureing that the question pertains to the lower bearing in the chain case that the track drive shaft runs on? If the bearing has only one seal / shield and that is facing the chain what stops snow / water etc. from getting into the bearing? I must be missing something here? At any rate I deleted my original response to avoid a mistake being made based on my error.

I am also not 100% and that is why I mentioned to post it elsewhere.

But being since he said the directions said to do so, plus, going from my memory and thinking it sounded backwards to me when I first heard about it, I thought I had better give my 2 cents.

I found this link, and in the last picture you can clearly see the seal on the lower bearing, but no seal on the top bearing.

Yes the seal goes on the inside, toward the gear. It seems like it should be the other way, I know, but that's how it goes. I believe the explanation is that the seal keeps metal fragments out of the bearing. You will see, when you take out the old bearing, that oil still makes its way behind the bearing keeping it lubricated. There's an oil seal, on the drive shaft, that keeps the oil in and the water out.

After reviewing past post, I installed it with the seal AWAY from the gear. I figured if there were shavings getting wipped up in the case, all the other bearings that are not sealed would be in trouble too. I agree that annual oil changes would be the thing to do.
