Aren't we directed to only change the filter every 10,000 - 12,000 miles? Shouldn't have to do that more then once every 2 or 3 years at most???

I change my oil at the beginning of every season regardless, Also I am switching to mobil one this year and want to relocate the filter when I do this. I do some grass dragging and some very hot runs across Houghton Lake all year, so I just feel better changing the oil at the begining of the season. All oils break down over time, especially when they have been sitting for 6 months.

Sure, it makes sense to change the oil often, but the filter doesn't need to be replaced each oil change. At least not according to Yamaha specs. And, you don't need to pull the battery to change just the oil. For as often as the filter needs to be replaced, I can't justify the cost of the rel. kit. And, its just more weight your adding to an already heavy sled. Just my take on it.

I guess I have to kind of agree with you on just about all that except that if I am going to change the oil, I am for sure going to put a new filter on.
Why wouldn't I, I don't want anything that is left in that filter getting the new oil dirty. I know you get almost all the old oil out when you drain it, but I just feel better knowing I got as much as I can out of there, beside's I think the filter only cost me like $12.00 at my dealer with my discount.

Now if i remember right my book that came w/my 03 rx1 stated to change oil and filter every 2,000 miles or more depending on use, some of us would have to do this 2-3 times a year, and having the filter located for easy install will always help,i am not sure where you heard only change oil and filter every 10,000 miles, but i wouldent go any where near that milage!!!

Hi Guys,
Not trying to stir anything up here. The Yamaha Manual says to change the filter (I'm not talking about the oil, I said the oil FILTER) every 10,000 or 12000 miles. I forget which. I'm not making this up, really. Its right in your manual under the routine maintenance section. The oil change is seasonal atleast and that makes sense, but these motors run so clean they don't need a filter every oil change. Are you hurting anything by changing it every time, Hell no. User preference, but it is a tremendous pain to change, and if Yamaha says you don't need to, why would you? Some other guys with the manual chime in here, and help me out please

Red2003,
You're right! the book say change oil every 2000 mil. and oil filter everything 12000 mi.

From the Periodic Maintenance Chart in the Owner's Manual:
Change oil every 2,000 miles
Change oil filter every 12,000 miles
Again these recommendations are subject to the degree of operation.

I also change my oil once a year but I change mine at the end of the riding season. The acids built up during the riding season dont sit and eat at your engine while it is sitting all summer. I would never change oil and not the filter whats an extra hour if you only do it once a year. The front compartment needs a good cleaning then anyhow and it is a good time to check the battery condition and the steering linkage so I am not going to put a relocation kit on. I also use Amsoil 4 stroke ow40 oil which state the Yamaha standards are met.

Interesting reading. The majority of sled riders like to tinker on their machines, so I'm a bit dumbfounded on why the hang up on the small amout of time it takes to change the oil filter only once a season if that? While the relocation kit definitely simplifies the change, for that money and the amount of times the filter gets changed, I could think of a lot of other things to spend my money on. Like Sled Dog said, it's a good time to get in there and clean anyway.
