here is what many of us do....
I like the idea of running the 12v plug direct to the battery....you use new wire and also a 10amp inline fuse, and hook the new wire for 12v to the battery jumper leads.
then, you run your heated shield wire to the existing wire that originally ran the 12v,since its plugin is right there on left side under the cowl, just follow 12v wire down to plugin.
now you have a constant 12v acc plug for cell phone,GPS,radar gun,ect ect...and not have to have your sled running to charge phone ect.
my shield hasnt popped a fuse yet wired to existing 12v fuse.

I did what Dan did and love the fact the shield doesn't cool down when you shut the sled off. Seems I'm always stopping for something. LOL.
I wired it directly from the battery while in there for an oil change and installed a fuse panel under the cowling so the GPS,CSS Light,Heated Sheild has it's own fuse size. I left the Power Outlet stock for the Phone charger and backup for extra heated shield for my grandson. I put a master inline fuse near the battery.
Dan's way will get you there faster. I use Ancor wire from West Marine it's the best. I still think I'm building boats.

i left my heated shield hooked to stock 12v supply so mine does not heat unless motor is running....but that idea you have is pretty cool, you can leave helmet plugged in while sled not running and keeps shield warm and clean...cool idea.

Mine is wired directly to the battery. Best way to do it.

Battery is good however make sure you place an in line fuse in case the cable or connector shorts! If not, you run the risk of shorting the battery.
I have mine wired into the taillight and the connector mounted on the handlebar..
