better ski for packed powder

I have an 07 Mtn Lite with stock skies. I ride mainly powder and this time of year in Michigan the powder in the woods gets tight and steering gets real hard. Normal powder conditioins the stock skies suit me well but the tight pack virgin snow is hard to steer. You guys have any suggestions for better ski application. I think the keel is to large for the snow condition, remember, this is untouched snow, just late season crusty snow. Thanks
 
Yeah, I agree. I don't typically get those conditions, but we did have a dry spell a while back with a warm up, and the snow ended up getting a crust on top of the powder. The skiis did not work well in those conditions. Seemed like the sides would bite and spit you around.

I do think the stock skiis are great in powder, but wonder if there is a happy medium for those other crusty snow days?

I'm thinking of getting the simmons gen 2 ski next year. I have also experienced the darting effect of the stock skis in crusty snow and have tried evrything from suspension settings to alignment and nothing helps. I think the 10 inch simmons will help with keeping the front end up in deep snow and the double skag design and no deep keel will eliminate the darting but still allow positive stearing. Just my 2 cents.
 
I called Mountain performanc and they said the gen 1 skis would be better than the gen ll, I cannot remember why because I looked at slydog and about 3 other skies and info. I want a better track also
 
Yeah, I disagree, because this is the mountain sled forum, and the Phazer needs all the float it can get in the deep. I have read numerous reports on the Gen2's, and everyone except trail guys say they are better than the Gen1's, but none of these guys have tried both, so.....

I have a couple of friends with the Gen2's on Nytros, and they love them.

SledheadsMagazine had a Rev build where they used Gen2's and said that they were awesome in the deep, and also worked better than the stockers on trails.

A poster in the Nytro section said that the dealer he got his Gen2's from laughed at them at first, but now puts them on their Turbo Nytro demos, over any other ski.

If you search the Nytro forums, you will see overwhelming support for the Gen2's over the Gen1's.
 
not whaat I am refering to. if you read back to original I am refering to snow that has set up. Still virgin snow but tight from thaws and refroze. heck, my factory skies are awsome in powder, I am not trying to improve on that area. Trail they are fine also. I personally called Mountain Performance and sked and that is what they recommended. I explained to them the conditions I was trying to improve on. It would be nice to get some more feedback on both gen 1 and 2.
 
I have heard from most, that the GEN 2 are too wide for most people's uses. However, they offer awsome floatation, but most in our area with them, say they are a little too wide and pose issues on the trailer if trailering 2 sleds, and also on trail conditions. I however have had no first hand experiences.............
 
Just about any ski is better than the stockers on crusty pow. If you think the stock yammies are awesome in powder, then you need to experience real flotation from a 10" wide ski. Hate to say, but those yammie skis are total POS's. Gen 2's are WAY better than the stockers at everything, including crust.

Buddy with Gen2's on Nytro says steering effort was lighter on hardpack because of dual, shallow keels, but they definitely take up more room on the trailer. Go to Simmons' web site and see how they work.

I just looked at my Gen2's that I won't get to ride this season, and the keels with wear bars are just less than 2 inches tall.

rfabro, thanks for the input bro. I have another question. I am looking at some less expensive mods so I don't have to sell my Mtn Lite. I live and ride exclusivly in the UP of MI. I ride mainly offtrail. This year I started getting into climbing. I quickly found out the mtnlite is lacking track speed. Is this machine incapable of meeting the needs of my riding style. Here is what I am considering. Change gearing to give more track speed, air box mods, exhaust mods, fuel mods (probably not the pricy Hauck stuff) 2.5 track if it will fit. I am curious as to what gains I can accomplish, or even after these mods will I still be wanting more out of it. There are many things I like about the sled to try an keep it but it just doesnt have the power, has extra bottom end so the top end gear should not hurt it. ny ideas? And no, no super charger, nitro or turbo
 
If you really deck it out, you'll like it a lot better, that's for sure. All the mods you're talking about, along with good clutch parts and tuning, will really wake the Phazer up.

But you may still be on the bubble after spending all that money. While you can MAYBE get 100 HP and some good track speed, you will also get progressively more aggressive at climbing, and 100 horses may still not do it for you after all. Especially if you ever want to come to the Rockies(and why not?).

So, I would say save your money for a Nytro, or maybe soup the Phazer like you said, and maybe(I know you said no) turbo the sled in the next 2 or 3 years.

After all, from what you said about your riding, you might like a T-Phazer better than a Nytro.

"I have both the Gen 1 and the Gen 2 and love the Gen2 in the deep and trail. The Keels are the same, Gen2 are funny looking at the gas pump till you get used to it but work great on and off the trail they are wider but have a wing design so only uses what it needs. I believe Simmons designed the Gen2 for the Yammi 4 strokes heavy front ends." - Tippylake
