Hi. I changed my chaincase oil after installing new gearing and chain and replacing all bearings last year. 1000 miles on the new gears and the oil is black, like used motor oil. I am using the Amsoil gear lube, which I have always used. Normally the oil is clear, with some bottom contaminates after a season of 2000 or 3000 miles. Is the condition of the oil a concern? With the gear change my chain tensioner whines a bit, like the Polaris Edge sleds, but I read that it is not uncommon.

You may have the chain tension set too tight.

That discolouration has gotta be from breaking in the new parts. That is synthetic oil so it's one of the best lubricants for the job.

Maybe, but when the sled was new the oil looked ok even after 3000 miles. I filled it up with 8.xx ounces today.

If you replaced the upper bearing on the jack shaft, did the bearing have grease in it? That bearing is open to the chain case correct? I'm sure some grease in the oil would darken it up.

Flush it . I put in Trans fluid ,and take it for a rip .2 miles, better with a load , but if there is no snow , lift and spin track, then drain and put in gear oil.

Like rooster said, if the upper bearing you replaced had grease in it, that would be enough to contaminate the oil. Change the oil & check it again

Isnt Klotz chaincase oil black too?

Drain and refill with fresh

Upper bearing in the chain case isn't greased. Anyway, I changed and will keep an eye on it for sure.
But I like what tomanytoyz suggested and will flush it next time.
I might change the track next year anyway.

Thanks all!
