Blown engine update!!! Looking for suggestions!

Geez LB, my buddy and I went to Ohio a couple weeks ago on a flying trip...went right by Buffalo on I-90. Of course it was about 4 am on the way out...but on our way back it was more like 4 or 5 pm.

We'll see what happens...I have several possibilities right now, and until I hear back from Yamaha, then take time to fight, scream, and beg, I won't be making any decisions. Ijust wish I had the $$$ to put into it right now. But by next year, our shop should be sold, and at that time my wife and I will be buying 2 new sleds, and maybe even a third for my stepson. Funny thing is...they were all going to be Yamaha 4-strokes. Now it will depend on how mine is handled this time. I have a brother-in-law and his wife who want to get back into sledding, and having had bad experiences with older 2-smokes, they loved my RX...but now they are looking into a pair of Cat 660Ts. Its amazing how one bad experience can affect so many people's buying decisions.

Yeah, don't feel that I'm trying to pressure you here, 'cause I'm really rooting for ya. I only want it in the event that you do really WANT to give up on it (I hate the feeling that you know that you're taking advantage of someone - except when its someone you hate, like the government). It sucks when something bad happens, and it sucks when it has such serious repercussions. And I think that you really got screwed over by your first dealer - we know that you're in the right on this, but the warranty is expired and those first SOB's didn't report it.

I wonder if there is any kind of legal action that you can take against that dealer?

You want to know the truth from my perspective? Warranty SUCKS. Without a warranty you have freedom - it buggers up, deal with it without the pressure of having to fight for it to be done by the dealer.

I think we can also learn something from your experience. Keep better documentation of the issues and be relentless in dealing with the so-called "dealers".

I really hope that if you really do decide to jump ship, that if you have any problems with your next sled, that you will have an easier time dealing with it, but in my own experience, brand makes no difference with regards to the issues you've had. I had the same kind of problems with Honda. I haven't had any serious enough issues with Yamaha equipment to cause that kind of problems... and I have lots of Yamaha equipment (4 sleds, 2 PWC, 1 ATV, 1 portable outboard, 1 VMax outboard) they're now ALL off warranty. Not to say I haven't had any issues with them, 'cause really, this RX1 has been some trouble, though Yamaha *did* get me a new track on warranty... It really did suck that the chaincase blew up. But statistically speaking, these seem to be some of the best engines ever put in sleds.

I had a nice conversation with Broken RX on the phone earlier, and I think its time to do with sleds what I do with cars...don't buy brand new. I could have saved $1500-$2000 by buying a very slightly used one. I paid $8900 on Dec. 16th 2002 (found my paperwork). Atthe same time, there were several used ones with between zero and 500 miles for $6000-7500. In fact, the one I had a chance to get from someone who spring ordered and backed out, was brand new, still in the crate, and would have been $7500. Basically, she was selling it for what was owed after she put money down the previous spring.

So I save $1500-$2000 by giving up a warranty...which was almost useless to me anyway. That money could have gone toward future repairs, or to mods. I think I might look for a very slightly used sled next time, just to save the hassles. Hell, like you said, the warranty just gets in the way of modding it anyway! I had to wait to do my Cat skid because of the warranty, which I would have loved to do far sooner!

Yeah, me too on the used. Hell, I paid $1700 cdn for my 87 Exciter in 96, put no more than $1000 into maintenance, cost was $2700 for 7 years of use. Each of the maintenance and depreciation separately, over 3 years now, is more than that for less than half the time. What did I do? stoopid, stoopid, stoopid.... LaLaLa

LB save your time and money these motors cost a bundle to repair i went this route buying two motors one from burnt sled and one with rod through block here is some dollar sings for as i am canadian as well 4 gaskets including head gasket rings and bearings $600.00 send block to millenium for renic another 5to $600.00 dont know yet as i dont have it back yet.crank $800.00 priced falicon rods as they are the best rod i have seen yet widely used in r1 race bikes $895.00 us for a set of four and i havent been able to find price on wiseco or je pistons yet.you are right you can weld the cases easily done i did it to the block that the rod went through after grinding and having it milled for proper seal cant even tell where i fixed it but that is the cheap part.so in the end my cheap motor will almost cost what the one listed on ebay will go for and oh yeah my head gasket and a few other parts are back ordered til march 16. so next weekend in revy i will be riding my 97 summit 670 and that sucks as it was to my wifes piece of crap to get her stateted on and i will be riding it should have kept my mountain modded viper til i had this thing running sure pays to be cheap. :ORC live and learn. my reasoning was the same didnt want to go modding a new motor buy crap one and mod should have went other route.to build this motor from scratch would cost over $7000.00 canadian.

I agree with you guys to buy used. I have a 2004 black warrior with 536 miles with extened warrenty, stock, . NO SNOW

You guys are killing me.

I really wouldn't be going for shipping. I'd rather drive myself. Then I get the fun of the drive AND have a REASON to go!

Broken RX: I know how to patch and reinforce that kind of damage. Would add a couple pounds of dead weight to the engine, but it would be plenty strong and sealed. As for the crankshaft itself... when it blows, it blows :)

One of you guys... or both... I *really really* want something thats nice and screwed up to play with. More because I actually *like* to work on this kind of messed up stuff than that I want the final result.

The last really really screwed up engine I redid was a '90 superjet 650. Its a 2-smoke, so its simpler, but I was 15. Works great now, but its sat on my trailer for a few years (don't really need one). It had a nice hole in the crank from CORROSION (right through), and the oxides in the case and cylinders were compression packed.

I hauled it up from FL Keys.

nkrxrider: That motor is too good. I would feel terrible ripping it down to modify the crap out of it.

Actually, you kill me if you think it's worth the time and money to go pick up a basketcase like that and spend countless amounts of both to "maybe" get the thing running again. What are you gonna repair the softball size hole with, JB weld?

Still looking for a motor, I would go $2600(us funds) for my 03 with 1600 miles. Parting out the sled, let me know what you need. I will crate and help with shipping ;)!
