i need a little help

my rx1 non boosted has been bogging like an SOB, and i'm not sure of a fix? here's a bit of info, 03 rx1, under tunnel exhaust, 18/40 gearing, 162 track. the sled runs strong till i get into powder.

last weekend in somewhat deep snow at around 9500 elevation it seemed to be starving for air and would bog and burble, i'd clean off the vents and it'd clear out a bit till a wave of snow hit it again or half way up a climb. heading down the trail a little lower in elevation it ran strong.

so i put filter fabric over (aka panty hose) over all the vents and the air intake for the air box. well i went out yesterday and it wouldn't even pull 8500 rpms so over the course of the day i removed all of the fabric. the snow was real deep up high and around 9500-10,000 it ran like crap, i'd look at snow and it'd start bogging, get it out on the road and it'd pulled hard.

i've got it jetted for about 8000-9000' and i've thought about re-jetting and going thru the carbs but i have almost pin pointed it to snow/air intake. my thought was the less restrictive exhaust maybe causing it to run lean or rich? but i'd think it perform poor on the roads as well as powder if it was jetting? the burbles have been a persistant thing where as the bog seems to be on big powder days? i had plans of boosting the sled but if i can't get it to pull hard in powder w/out boost i don't want to waste more time and money, this ain't a trail machine and i need to get it dialed

what have folks with the turboed rx1's done to deal with this issue, i've heard the k@n doesn't seem to help that much? different hood desgins? snorkel systems? fan? i looked at holes behind the windsheild but it has pretty good holes already?

thought/commets thanks

Maybe you're blocking the exhaust outlet in the deep, that would kill performance. You say it runs great on the trail... maybe it's in your clutching. Too much secondary pulling down the rpms in the deep, just a thought.

If it feels like adding chocke it sounds like air delivery is getting restricted, that would produce the same result as opening the chocke lever.

yep, feels like the choke is on

pulled the vent cover off the right side, over the oil reservior and man what a difference the sled opened up and ran well. sure i got snow in the side compartment but i'll take it for the sled to run.

still has a slight burble at low rpm's, not sure if this is something i need to live with or if i should start rejetting. plan is to go thru the carbs this week.

Great to hear it was an easy fix :-) Good idea to go thru the carbs, have a good clean up. You should consider syncronizing the carbs when they are back on the sled again. If the carbs are out of sync your sled would run rough down low no matter what you do. You will also get smoother power and more power all over with perfectly synced carbs.
