So we are out playing lastnight in some deep fluff and all of a sudden revs shot up and sled stopped moving, thought I blew a belt but had a sinking feeling my axle broke again as this had happened before. Checked the belt good, new what it was so I didn't even bother to look under the sled. Towed her home and sure enough sheared off on the chain case side right at the collar that is against the first cog. Different theories on how this happens; ice chunks, track too tight???? All I know is that it sucks being towed. Anyone have any ideas? What aftermarket stronger axles are out there?

Can you give the mileage on your machine when it first broke and also the present mileage?
Mine broke at the same location with 9600 miles on it. I have a new one in there now, it was a lot of work to replace it :o|

Was it on your ZX2 machine? Mine also broke after the ZX2 installation and I thought the track was too tight (per recommended procedure). I have since run it looser, tight past ratchet and no problems since. Some say that's crap, but others swear by it. Any opinions?

About 900 miles after I installed my ZX2 my driveshaft broke same place. Total mileage was near 9,000 miles. Getting close to 9,700 miles now I think.

There was no ice buildup we were about 200 miles into the days ride when at about 20mph up a small hill it let go. Hardly had any power on at all. I too wondered if my track was to tight. Maybe its a mileage thing?

axle

Both on my 05 first break at about 8500 kms this was with the RA suspension, second at 14500 kms this was with the ZX2. The tunnel protectors are coming out as I never run studs and never will. I would expect some dents in the front heat exchanger if it were due to ice jamming between the tunnel and the drivers. As for track tension I have always run my tracks as loose as possible so I don't believe this is the issue. Called the dealer looking for a used shaft and he said he had two come in on the weekend with the same problem.

mine broke with 5000 miles on machine! now i carry a spare in the trailer, thanks to vince. i have an m-10 and i do run studs, will not run without studs, so removing the heat exchanger protectors is out for me. if it happens again i will probably buy that thicker shaft from mb.

Both mine broke next to the collar on the first driver on the chaincase side, I'd look here. Probably not easy to do in place I would remove it and slide the collar off and inspect. I've been picking them up used for 150 CDN complete with drivers. Save alot of bucks but don't know how stressed the used have been.

mine snapped in the middle, i go about 300 lbs.

Mine broke on my 04 warrior at 7500 miles and now my daughters is broken at 7000 miles on her 05 rx1. What is the deal? seems 10 grand should get you a little more. Do the Apexs do the same thing?
