Does anybody heard saw or experienced yamaha std. rods failures
on turbos? Wonder if those are really needed :ORC I installed some,
(very sturdy loocking) compaired to oem. but i think they must be
more beneficial for a atmospheric high reving ported eng. Rpm i think
is what might destroy rods (as detonation will) turbo power tends to
be smooth  and increased combustion pressures reduces
"rod strech" . I would like your opinions on that?
WHO BROKE RODS AND AT WHAT BOOST PSI???
THANKS

I don't know, but some people who are supposed to, suggested that it would be wise for prolonged boost over 15 lbs, so I did. This is only the 3rd year of turbos on the RX-1 and each year has been a learning curve. The first year there were very few installed and last year was the first year for most of us. We all started out running low boost, say 5 to 8 lbs. Most will tell you more boost is more fun. I ran 12 lbs. alot, but by the end of the year I wanted more. So now I have 10 to 1's with the .054 Cometic gasket and the Carillo rods. I will be running up to 20 lbs. My point is, I am not the only one craving more power and boost. I think by the end of this year, we will have more turbos running more boost in varying states of engine tune and build and alot more info. As they say, hindsight is 20/20. I hope we have no catastrophic engine failures. I feel a little better prepared with the mods I have done.
Our mission is to go where others haven't and hope we can get back.

I did check the price of a case today. 1200 retail. which means you can get it for under 1000 with a 20% discount. The rods cost 1000 plus install and the rebuild would be 1000 plus labor plus whatever part of the crank goes. Is it worth the risk? I say good question.

Hey Buckeye! Did you pick out a new turbo yet?

ARE YOU SAYING THAT BOOST IS A FORM OF CANCER OF OUR SELF
PROTECTION SYSTEM
RODS ARE A SHURE "CHEAP INSURANCE" BUT IS IT REALLY NEEDED?
KEEP THAT CARRILLO MONEY TO BUY RACE FUEL AND CRANK UP THAT BOOST SOME MORE END OF WINTER IS WHAT I SAY!

Yes! It's a Garrett.

The con rod in the RX motor is the exact same part # as the 03 R1 street bike. Redline on the R1 is 11,750 RPM. The inertial loads on a con rod are the largest loads an engine typically sees, and these loads are proportional to the RPM of the engine squared. If the rod is already strong enough to handle almost 12K RPM, it is going to be safe for at least 100 HP above stock (140+100 = 240HP). After that point, you are starting to talk about making serious horsepower, and serious HP requires serious engine preparation.
Do the Rods.

You saw that topic on mc-xpress dynoing a rx-1 WITH STOCK RODS
making 404 hp  . I think that, if they fell they really needed
to change rods to make this 400+ dyno pull they would have done it?
they changed pistons and added a " BIG-MAC" style head gasket...
MC-XPRESS were one of the first to install turbos on rx-1's and have
experience on motorcycle turbos so :ORC for the ones waiting for those
rods to arrive, i say leave the stockers in

Currently only 9, but will probably be up to 17ish soon enough once new slugs and boost controller go in.

Does one need good rods..... run over 16 lbs boost, they should be viewed as good insurance... safeguard 1 is should your system have a problem with fuel delivery, lots of things can happen that good rods prevent, like sawing the block and everything elese in half,,, i have done it.. One can also stretch stock rods under excessive loads with out massive engine destruction.... but when you take the engine apart, you will see rod strech, just short of creating bearing problems... Building a hot rod rx1 is no different than building a v8, going to take the engine to new limits, put in the right parts, or real bad things can happen to your wallet... want to live on the edge and save a couple bucks, run over 16 lbs and take your chances...

KIP, rod strech will hapen if you increase rpm's nothing to do with a
