Freind of mine had his 06 apex serviced at the steelership and on our forst ride after about 50 miles there was a ratcheing sound then bad vibration. Upon closer inspection the chain case was bone dry. Drain plug was not even in it.

Took it apart and the chain is stretched so far that it is jumping the gears and has worn all the gears. The outer bearing is toast because of the heat, seems quite dry and the seal was melted. Question is what about the inner bearings, if this thing got that hot wouldnt they be damaged as well? What about the shaft itself? Would it be weakend because of the extreme heat in the case? Fun part will be going back to the dealer and make them pony up for their screwup. Nice.

Your dealer should step up and fix it for you, just don't go in there with your hair on fire, yelling and screaming. I'm sure they'll realise they made a mistake. Just make sure they replace ALL moving parts, and let you inspect the parts, or give you the bad ones?

The jackshaft and driveaxle shaft are probably OK as well as the chaincase and the cover. I would have them replace EVERY part that moves: all seals, all bearings, the two sprockets, the chain, the idler wheel and bearing. If you don't, you will be likely chasing problems for the entire season. Tell the dealer you want to see ALL the old parts, short of watching them during the work, this is a good way to help make sure they have not take shortcuts with parts. This is EXACTLY why I have not let the dealer do ANY work to my sleds or bikes. In any event, it is always good to check the fluid levels everyday before a ride.

It is also good to dump the chaincase oil and flush it at the end of the season. This helps get all the accumulated water out thus not allowing it to sit and corrode things all summer.

You would think that you would not have to worry about dealership repairs but I have had similar experiences that have convinced me otherwise.

After having the chaincase cover on my SRX come loose dumping all of the oil right after the dealer did a track swap and then after the same dealer forgot to tighten the chain tensioner on my Viper causing the chain to jump gears, I now do all of my own non-warranty work and I now double check the dealers warranty work.

I suppose that anyone can make a mistake and the mechanic that did both of the above repairs no longer works at that dealership. However I still double check the dealers work just as I do my own work.
