Chaincase oil level

I just read on the FAQ section on chain case oil change that all four strokes with reverse only need 4 oz. of fluid?

I drained mine last night and what came out looked less than 8.5 oz. and closer to 4 oz. I was wondering if anyone could tell me if 4 oz. was true and why?

Just download the pdf service manual from this site and you have all the info you ever need to service that machine......

I'm weird sometimes but what I've been doing is checking the oil level first then if is o.k. I'll drain it into a small container. I then mark the container were the oil line is. I clean the container then put in fresh oil to the mark and fill the case.
I keep the container for next time. Easier then trying to figure out ounces and what it will take to get it back to the right spot on the dipstick.
The trick is to catch all the oil.

My 2003 RX-1 service manual says 8.5 US oz., 4oz does not seem like nearly enough.

Look on your belt guard. It is printed there along with other specs. 8.5 oz is the correct amount.

Bingo...

I always put in 8oz in my RTX that had rev. I used Amsoil series 2000 and never had any problem with the case in 7,000 miles. Just changed it mid and at the end of the season. Make sure you really clean and dry all the parts, most importantly the gasket. and you'll be fine.

That is mainly why I asked this question. I don't see what it would hurt to have 8.5 oz in there.

I will probably go with the 8.5 oz. level.

I just changed mine. The dipstick has two marks on it. The "rev" mark is much lower, but it took 8oz to get up to that mark.

guys I have had this ? and issue since my 98 XTC deluxe and have a creative solution.

I have just put 8 in there, it works fine AND you can say well you know I have to much chain / gear lube in there other wise I would be faster. LOL

No seriously I have like many others just put in the 8 and run for over 20k miles, never a chain or gear issue.

If I want to drain the chaincase, is there a plug, or do I have to siphon it out? I see a small bolt on the bottom inboard side of the case at the bottom edge of the tunnell near the footrest. I was wondering if this was the drain plug? It has the original chaincase oil in it with 4800 miles on it and I would like to change it out...

BINGO! thats the 1, have a measuring cup handy to refil it w/250ml or 8.5oz. and you're all set, I change mine every 1000 miles or so only takes 10 min. and will prolong the life of your chaincase big time! also check your chain tension adjustment it explains how to adjust in your owners manual. ;)!

Thanks. I will do it when I break her out in the fall. Lots of suspension/skidframe work to do in October anyway.
I have kept it checked and adjusted, but its definitely overdue for the change!
