While the TURBO is out and getting worked on by the doctors at Garrett, I pulled the skid for general maintanence.
I noticed one idler was very tight so I pulled it off and the bearing was trashed.
I went through every wheel in the skid.
EVERY single bearing was shot, dry, rusted, crap, gone, junk. .... you get the message. All of these wheels felt free and spun OK (a few felt a little rough) but there was no good grease left. With a careful approach, you can remove the seals, clean the bearing, (carb cleaner or WD40,) blow them dry with compressed air if possible. Repack the bearing or just go by new ones.
The stock outer rear axle wheels are sealed and had to be replaced all-together.
I firmly believe this is why some sleds run great one season and lose performance the next.
Take a minute, pull one or two wheels and check them before the season starts.
My sled is an 03 with 4,100 miles. I take real good care of it and it's garaged every night. The thaw that occurs every nIght might actually lead to premature gearing failure.
Just an FYI for everyone.

You are corrrect about the bearings slowing you down . All sleds have this problem of water getting in the bearings . The suspention should be gone over in the spring and the water removed . Better check your driveaxel bearing as well they also have a tendancy to get water in them and far worse to have go when ridding .

bearings

i change every skid bearing before rideing and have done so for years. cheap ins. so you dont come home and find wheels missing or not to come home. these are just a tune up item

I have replaced every bearing in my RX-1 2003 skid this autumn, all of them were shot. Sled has 7300 kms on it. Some wheels where of the sealed type and you can't change the bearings.

I did not replace the sealed stock wheels. I did buy the ones used on SRX700, they are not sealed and you can change bearings on them, and they are a lot cheaper (including the bearings) than the stock ones. I bought the parts necessary from srx700 and made my own 4th wheel kit, also cheaper than aftermarket kits.

rxrider.............. cool hearing from someone in Norway.
Do they breed the girls in Norway the same way we hear of in Sweden???
What's the length of the riding season there?
OTIS

Otis RX - Yes girls here in Norway are as pretty as them of Sweden and Denmark, Scandinavian girls are........ what I thought :-)

Riding season has just started though the trails has not opened jet. Small lakes are safe. Larger lakes, rivers and streams are not safe until early January when the cold weather usually kicks in with -20 C to -40 C. It has been a warm november with temps around freezing point. Temps outside right now is -11 C. We only got about a foot of snow so far.

But on the other hand trails are open to May 5. and it is possible to ride until late May or early June in the mountains. So length of riding season is about 5 months at least. Beeing so far north there is not much daylight until end of January, the polar night started november 19. Sun returns on January 21.
