Sounds like you are not fully engaged into reverse. When I first got my machine. I had the same type of thing happen. I have learned to make sure the back up alarm is sounding before I engage the throttle to go backwards. Sometimes I have to move forward a little to get reverse to engage. Maybe your needs to be adjusted?
On another note had a similar experience with clunking chain case, but it was after a hard brake sliding to a stop. My machine would not move. Clunking from the chain case when the throttle was engaged. Had buddy lift machine and it unjammed itself when I shifted into reverse. This happened last year. I removed the chaincase cover at home, everything appeared normal. Hasn't happened since.

Big guy if you jam on the brakes right to a complete stop the belt does not get a chance to come up to the top of the secondary. Like starting out in top gear. Could be this is what you heard, Makes a horrible sound but it is coming from the belt. Test for yourself.

The other thing I noticed about reverse on my attak is that it was out of adjustment from factory had to adjust linkages to fix now my forks stopped wearing as much and reverse works great.

Be gentle when you are changing directions, don't just slam on the throttle, ease into it until the gap closes.
There is a certain amount of play in the chaincase in order to allow the gears to be shifted from forward to reverse. You have to mind this play and not slam it. Slamming it hard can and WILL break things.
