I just picked up a 2010 XTX and the clutch has a rattle at idle. The guy I bought it from says this is normal but I'm pretty sure it didn't come from the factory like this. The sled has 4500 miles on it and I am not sure on huge maintenance history on it. I will be pulling the clutch apart this week to investigate, just wondering if there is something that is a known problem or any hints in what to look for? Any help would be great.

Do a search, well known issue - Fine to leave it, or there is some that attempt to get rid of it. I havent got around to it myself.

X2 normal. Not really the clutch, but a stub shaft on end of crank. There is a fix here somewhere, you will find it. Not expensive either. If this is your first yammie four stroke, you have a lot of reading to do. They really like you to search for stuff and snoop around before you ask too many questions. If you can't find the answer, then ask. Good luck. This is the best snowmobile site going so you have the right sled. And your location under your name is a site requirement. You may have an expert living close by.

It is supposed to be a small gap in the splines of the outgoing shaft (this makes the rattle) of the motor. If it does not have that gap it can not expand when the shaft is getting warm and it can cause bearing failure. Do not try to weld it. Possibly you can use some sort of glue but the best thing is to accept the noise and ignore it.

The noise is quite normal, and as Supa Dexta said, is a well known issue. Much of it is due in part to the engine's 120* firing order, and won't cause any problems. I've used some very thin fiber washers on the shaft that holds the primary arms, and it did keep it from rattling, but I wasn't confident leaving them in there over time as they didn't allow the arms to move as freely, so I took them out.
Just bring your Ipod or whatever you use, and turn up the tunes....

View this thread and it will explain the rattle but I think it's something that will always be there. I find it easier to live with it lol

It is what it is, no one has come out with a full proof fix yet. Will not harm anything.

When I got my Nytro home and tore apar, I then started it up without any plastic pieces (or more importantly the insulating foam pieces on the back side of the panels) and holy cow was the rattle loud! I am glad I read about it on here prior to buying or else I might have had my blood pressure raise for no reason! With your helment on you can't hear it much at all.

I have 4800 miles on 09 XTX and donuts are fine. Just FYI. Worth checking them out.

Squeeze the throttle and you will forget all about it. I heard the same rattle, read all the post on it and said screw it. I am not tearing it apart if I don't have to. Now I don't even notice it. I have heard 2 stroke clutches rattle worse then the nytro rattle. Ride and don't worry. There are guys that throw 270 + hp at this motor and I don't think they do anything about the rattle.
