clutch

Here are a few pointers.

Check for grooves in the clutch sheaves. Run your fingers down the sheaves. It should be smooth and consistent. The stock yamaha belts are prone to grooving the sheaves due to their harder compound.

Weights should be smooth on the surface that rides against the rollers. Sometimes they can become "dished" meaning that have a dip somewhere on the contour of the surface.

Rollers should be smooth and free of any pits from rust.

Clean them. Compressed air works great to blow out all the belt dust. Then wash the clutch with soap and water.

All apex clutches have set screws on the weight shafts. the 06-10 have set screws on the roller shafts also. To play it safe...apply a little heat to the clutch at these set screws so they break loose easier. I just use a small propane torch designed for sweating copper pipe fittings. They are a small allen screw and you do not want to strip them!!!

When installing the cover back onto the clutch make sure you align the "x" on the inside of the cover with the "x" on the spider.

Hope this helps.
