Coil Bind?

What is coil binding and how can you tell if your sled does it or not?
 
Your spring runs out of compression room, because your preload is too tight. You can tell becuse you bottom it.

What do you mean bottom out?
 
It occurs when the spring totally compresses (coils are tight to each other)not allowing a clutch to fully shift out, Shock not able to stroke its full stroke or valve not to fully open. Caused by to long of a spring or installed height set incorrectly.

Example: Just imagine if you could crank your front suspension shock spring down to where you could not compress it anymore (coils touching each other) you would not be able to move the shock through its stroke, this is coil bind. I know this is extreeme but hope this clarifies coil bind for you. ;)!
 
Coil bind is when your spring preload is so high that you cant get full motion out of the spring or suspension. All the coils on the spring will contact each other on near full compression acting as if it were a solid sleeve of steel and binding the suspension mid way through travel. This is what coil bind is.

Basically it binds or locks the coil up feeling as if it bottoms too early. Bottoming out is the suspension blowing right through the travel down to the bump stop. Kinda like you getting a compression fracture in the spine when your hitting big g-outs and it feels like your skid is coming up through the tunnel.

Any one with an Mono skid stock knows what that feels like.

coil binding

I got an ulmer 2 kit last month for my apex and tried something. took stock back clutch and wound it up till it coil bound; marked it then tried a white spring, no different. took 120 tho off inside of helix, tried again no difference, coil bound before edges of helix and shive touched. Took spring and helix from kit an wound it up, marked it then done the same with stock shaved helix and spring from kit. conclusion: shaved stock helix and kit spring coil bound at the same place as kit helix but gained about 1/4 to 5/16 of more open shives because kit spring allows for more twist. gust my 2 cents worth
 
coil bind

the sillver spring does not bind like the white and pink does and the dalton black does not bind and it has more side force. and that why i use the 5/16 lock washers it,s that simple.
