hi all,
has anyone out there experienced cold engine starting issues? cold engine only that is. It is an aftermarket starter. i hesitated to state this as too many will blame it immediately. there was an unexplained shutdown of this machine before starter was replaced also. all comments and thoughts welcome.
in the morning after sitting outside camp all nite the machine
required 10-15 attempts of turning the key before engine would turn over.
later this worsened to 20-30 attempts to get sled off trailer after 3.5 hour
drive, (with cover on). once she turns over, she starts fine and continues
to do so. hasn't happened when starting periodically during summer.??

Did the starter relay click or did you get no sound when turning the key to
the cranking position? Once it did crank did it crank fast or slow?
No clicking, just nothing at all, then after many attempts normal cranking, and starting ok.

tight valves can make cold starts an issue... like blue dave said though, what is the issue?

intersting....I have a 2011 Apex that even when I witnessed it being started for the first time on a cold engine that to this day in any temperature it needs two to three tries to get it running. I now just hold the key a bit longer. I have sent videos to Yamaha techs and no word back for almost a year so it seems they dont have an answer either but didnt bother contacting me back about it

It dont want to start when cold?
Like it turns and turns but just dont start?
Mine did that and it was the pick up for the stator went bad. I had to replace my stator.
Once it warmed up you could shut it off and it would start fine. But getting it started was real difficult

From what I'm reading above there is no clicking, no cranking (slow or fast) just nothing. That would make me look at battery contacts first, starter relay second, starter soleniod third and ignition switch last. It is obviously an electrical contact issue. Moisture in the starter relay will freeze in cold weather and not allow the contact points to close. I say the ignition switch last because they don't fail very often. The starter soleniods have been known to fail on occasion but the relays are prone to picking up moisture especially if your running a lot of powder or breaking trail.

Not uncommon. 90 % of the time it is the relay having some moisture in it and when the moisture freezes the relay does not operate.
I relaced the original on my 06 and carried a spare after that but never had another problem.
Yamaha got some bad ones from their supplier in the early years of the Apex.
If you take it out and heat it up under your jacket for awhile it will work.
Under $20:00 to replace as I recall.

mine did the same thing it is most likely the selinoid for the starter they can get moisture in them and corode yours may not be nasty yet but may be iceing up if this is it it will get worse and leave you stranded.

Sounds like the relay - common problem on the Nytro - or similar electrical issue. Pull the plastics and put dielectric grease on all electrical connections. Most of the connectors are high quality but the relays and fuses tend to be less well sealed. Doesn't get real cold on the Avalon compared to a lot of other riding areas so unlikely its related to the temperature.

I see that you edited your post with more info. I agree with the others that if you are not hearing any click that the issue is probably the relay. If you can reproduce the problem it will be real easy to troubleshoot with a meter.

I also chased this type problem on the wifes 05 RX-1. we would ride - park the sled for the night next morning turn the key a bunch of times without anything. I switched the relays on the 2 sleds and no change sometimes it would do it and others not. eventually it did it in the heated shop. I went through everything and it turned out to be the key switch. I had several spares from other sleds and it never happened again.
