i have read some of the posts on the cold start issues.
i just had this last weekend. sled was indoors, plugged into charger, started good. rode for 40 minutes, shut it down for about 2 hrs out on the lake and it took about 3-4 trys to start. it also did this again an hour later after being turned off for only one hour. it was -20 celsius. next day -10 c and no problems.
i'm thinking of just changing the starter relay. is there an easy way to pinpoint which one is the starter relay ?
any other suggestions ?
never had a yamaha strand me... this made me think twice.

When this happens again , take off the fuel cap , cycle the key and listen to see if the pump cycles !
Then you will know if it is the relay !
If so it is at your left foot !

i can hear the pump cycle, i did not remove fuel cap.
the relays at the left foot.... there are four. what is the easiest way to determine which one, remove relay & try to start ? should it turn over or will there be nothing when correct relay is removed ?

Are you looking the starter relay or the fuel pump relay?

The fuel pump relay is by your left foot. Disconnect one by one until you no longer hear the fuel pump cycle on when you turn the key. One of the relays is different and that one is for the headlights so you can skip that one. It has different writing on top and is easy to spot as different.

The starter motor relay is by the battery.

looking at fuel relay. i'm sure when i was trying to start i could hear the fuel pump. machine would crank but not start. as stated it hapened more than once.
after 3-4 times of turning key off, then on, wait a second then crank, it finally started.
thing always starts first touch of key.
maybe a fluke but i'm worried about going out in cold

Try to use the search feature, it works great and keeps repetative topics down. Here is some reading.

Cheers.

:rocks:

Last weekend we where away travelling , -35 and 2 sleds wouldn't start.
Yes fuel pump was cycling , engine cranked fast enough to start but would not even fire !

I took hot water poured across the throttle bodies and they fired right away !

Cheap , old fuel , with ethanol or watch ever else they want to get rid of , does not want to vaporize at that temp !!!

Remember that trick , may save alot of grief !

When it's been as cold as it has this winter I'll put a bottle of dry gas in about every 4 tanks or if it has been sitting idle beteen trips. Failure to start is never an issue.

Ive been having trouble on starts and had a couple of rough running episodes ....ran the isopropyl in each tank and what a difference!
