Cold Starting Issue/Freezing Fuel Pump?

I bought an 2006 Attak last month with 500 miles on it. Love the sled so far but it will not start if left outside. The first weekend it was -25F so I attributed it to the extreme cold. Last time I rode it was 20F and the sled wouldn't start after sitting outside for four hours. I added some HEET to the tank but had the same result the next morning.

When I turn the key on to allow the fuel system to pressurize I can hear the relays clicking but the fuel pump does not come on. Drag her into the garage wait an hour and the fuel pump then activiates with the relay and she fires right up.

Anyone else have this issue? What is the fix? What does one do if the sled does this away from home?

Thanks,

Coach

Saw this same issue last year at the Manitoba TY ride. PM srxtwins. I seem to remember it was a relay that was freezing up.

Yes I had a similar problem. The sled would start in the morning went for gas and would come back to the hotel and shut it off. About an hour later it wouldn,t start. It did this twice before we narrowed the problem to the fuel pump relay. I now carry a spare relay with me( they are relatively inexpensive)but have not needed it since. When it doesn,t start listen for the pump when you turn the key on, if you don,t hear the pump heat the relays on the left footrest (I think the fuel pump relay is the inner most one)and try again......it will likely start. I have only heard of a very few people having this problem but it is worth checking.

If you indeed have an intermittently working relay, lightly tapping on it can sometimes coax it into closing and working again.

Another thought: .... (Although my sled is unavailable to see for myself)
I understand there is a bank of 3-4 relays above the left footwell. Look to see if the relays have the same part number on them. If they do they are interchangeable and can be switched around. You may be able to get out of trouble with a temporary substitution.

Do you have the part number for the fuel pump relay my buddy's 06 has the same problem last week end.

Can someone post a photo of where and what this relay looks like. I assume you have to pull of the left side panel to find it.

My '06 Attak has been doing this to me as well. I thought I had ice in the fuel lines but I noticed the pump not running when I turned the key on. Hair drier or garage for 30-45 min. and it would start every time. Kind of hit and miss.

Do your sleds turn over or just no fuel..If it's just no fuel you can use the headlight relay and away you go..The relays are intrchangeable..Mine slept outside at -20 and wouldn't even turn the starter. Not even with a jump from truck battery. Brought her home , put her in shop , waited an hour and the stupid thing fired right up.What do you think that is.. I tore it down to the starter today and tightened all the connections but can't really see a problem. Got her sleeping outside tonite to see what I get in the morning..

Go to this link and you'll see where 3 of the relays have been updated..Does that tell you that Yamaha has had a problem with them???

Mine turns over great.....just no fuel. I can hear the relay click but the pump never comes on. Do you other guys with "frozen" relays hear it click as well. If it clicks doesn't that mean it's working?

Thanks for the help so far!!!

Nope---Clicking doesn't mean a thing..This is a common problem . Trade it out for the headlight relay and you'll fire right up.

Tomrrow is supposed to warm up, I'm interested to see if mine is going to start, the last 4 days have been -35C and colder (Tuesday night it got down to -53C).

Mine did the same thing this weekend in hurley figured it was frozen fuel. Pulled plugs and checked fuel pump fuse both were good. By the way not the easiest things to do in the cold. Ended putting sled on truck and drove home 5 hours. Next morning it fired right up- I did hear that clicking noise so it must be the relay- wish I had read this post before would have saved myself alot of hassle. Of the four relays wich one is for the fuel pump?
