Copper donuts + Ultra copper gasket maker????

Well its a double edged sword. They may not seal 100% but they do stop the leaking for the most part and they dont collapse like the OEM units and as such the joint doesn't come loose and ruin the Y pipes.

Obviously when Yamaha designed the clamps they didnt envision using copper. Its not to say that the copper donuts wont work at all. It is however annoying that they are so difficult to remove. Im sure this aspect can be modified.

I for one would like to hear from the manufacturer and their thoughts on these things and how we may be able to work around it to make them right.

Yep. I was going to try this next time I had to remove one but unfortunately I didnt have a small torch when I took the first one of.
Is this something you have had first hand success with when trying to remove these copper donuts?
 
I was thinking of using the copper gasket stuff on the donuts as well as a thick coating on the inside of the clamp, so thick that it will oozes out a bit when the clamps are tightened, then let it cure overnight. This will hopefully give it a better seal.....I hope, lol!
By chance does anyone know what the exhaust temperature gets up to? The copper gasket stuff says that its good up to 700f (371c).
 
I have used copper exhaust gasket stuff and after first ride 400 km"s all burnt off. So I am in the process of having copper donuts installed am I going to have leaks? these are suppose to be better than stock no I have both donuts stock graphite and copper which do I use! lol

Murse, your in the same situation I am at the moment,lol!! Do we go with the graphite...good seal but break down quick or do we go with the copper which will definitely last much longer but may leak, compromising performance!!! :o|
Did you put the gasket stuff just around the donut itself, or on the inside of the clamp? I was hoping by putting lots in the clamp itself that it would not only fill any air space between the clamp & the flange/outer part of donut, but when tightened, the clamp should hold it all inn.
Has anyone using the copper donuts got their sled to stall using the plugged pipe trick?
Still would be nice to know what the exhaust temp is because if it is way higher than 700 degrees then there would be no point trying the gasket stuff.
 
I will check to see how the gasket maker holds up after I run it. My performance still seems ok. I would still run the copper. I will also see if I can remove them or not and advise.
 
I used the permatex brand copper stuff on a turbo flange (automotive) and it held up fpr 2 years until I removed and parted out the turbo system! If you are trying to patch holes with it, its not gonna hold up. Just like patching a hole in a valve cover with gasket maker isnt going to work.

So the way I want to try it might work? The only thing I am worried about is that it might get to hot & burn up. Two smokes exhaust is usaully 1200-1300 degress, not sure what temp the four strokes are. This gasket stuff is only rated to 700 degrees, it is the same as you have, permatrex ultra copper.
 
Used it inside in middle between clamps and pipe and then on top and it was all gone after 1 ride. We pulled it apart and didn't even look like we did anything to it. All burnt off. Will run copper I guess and do stall test. Dealer is installing so I guess all my faith is with them even though they've had the sled since Tuesday and still haven't done anything yet......
 
Thanks for taking the time to do the testing Murse!! It might be a good idea to log on a couple hundred miles then do the stall test to ensure the 700 degree copper silicone will hold out.
I have the copper donuts right now but might not have the time to install them this weekend.

I would run the copper as well. I will buy one from OFT this time and see if they are any different.
Id really like to hear some some feedback from Sled Toyz on what they think.

Now if we had snow we wouldnt be having this conversation :o|

I had it on a turbo downpipe flange. EGTs on a turbo system running hard can easily break 1000 degrees. 2 years and not a single leak.
 
That's good to hear. Well still waiting on local dealer to have mine ready, he's had my machine for a week......suppose to go ridding tomorrow but won't be now. Next weekend trucking it to Quebec so we'll give her a good test I'll keep you guys posted on the review of copper donuts and stainless y pipes if any difference in performance and any mpg gains etc etc.
