has anyone done the ring update and what has it cost. My dealer told me about $900 cdn to do the job, is this reasonable.

Thanks

I believe Yams service allows 13 hours for removal, teardown, rebuild and re-assembly - multiply that times the shop rate - $60-$80 U.S.. Rings are $100 US. Add all the gaskets that have to and should be replaced - thats another $100 and why Yam doesn't sell a gasket kit for that engine I don't understand.

Also - Valves should be checked and re-shimmed because they will be out of tolerance. Shims will cost around $100 US from Yam + what they charge for the labor - likely a few hours.

Yam says Valve lash good for 24,000 miles - maybe for a bike that spends most of its life under 7000 rpms. Mine after 4000 miles were no where close to spec. Talked to a few others on here that re-build engines and they find them commonly out of tolerance as well inside of 5000 miles. This wil not likely hurt your engine, but it hampers its performance.

Are you seeing a lot of oil usage? have 8500 miles on mine use about a quart in 1500 miles. Try Yamaha customer service they may help you out a little as they know about this problem with the 03's might be worth a shot. I know my dealer would make an effort to get them to help but he's always been awesome to work with ;)!

save some money by doing some of the work yourself. pulling the motor out is pretty strate forward. buy the 05 rings from the us 26.00 per hole vs 60.00.

I am all for doing things myself - I would not reccomend pulling the motor on your own unless you have a lot of free time on your hands and you are very comfortable with working on sleds. I just did it and you have to basically disassemble everythnig under the hood. The steering, the delta framing, fuel tank, oil tank, every inch of electrical has to come out. If you do it take pics so you know where everything re-routes too so there are no wires rubbing - you'll have an electrical nightmare otherwise. More of the labor of the job comes from removal and re-install of the engine. This should save you quite a bit if you do choose to do it.

And if you do it yourself - you might look into having Lakercr do the work - he has done a ton of these engines and he is out of Canada - he is the author of this thread http://www.ty4stroke.com/viewtopic.php?t=32636

Otherwise I believe Ted Jannety does a lot of the engines as well.

My Yamaha dealer (Beeline out of St. Cloud) - has not had to re-build 1 of these 4 cylinder 4-stroke motors yet and didn't know how to prime the oil pump as it is different than the R1 motorcycle engine. You just may be a lot better off having someone who has done a lot of them - to do the work.

rebuild

i have done a few and have not found them to hard . all of the wireing does not have to come out . all of the steering does not have to be removed. i should take 8-10 hour,s and it,s back runing if you have all the part,s. new gasket,s , rod bolt,s oil filter oil ,ring,s, anti freeze. but you should have two guy,s to lift out and replace the moter. and maybe some valve shim,s if it,s a high milage moter. the hard part is lifting it out and putting it back. the rest is all nut,s and bolt,s and the only tool that i had to buy was a degree tool for the rod bolt,s . cost was under 20.00 cdn . the electrical was only two canon plug,s . one to the cdi and one to the voltage reg. and the oil tank stay,s right were he lives. the shop manual is a must for the spec,s etc,etc .

Im with Black John. Took me about 10 hours. I lifted it out myself and put it in myself. I recommend not doing that unless you are a weight lifter like myself :tg: .

Dont forget, you need to have someone diamond hone the cylinders and that costs money as well.

You have all summer to tear it down and forget were all the parts go. Should get started soon... ;)!

That price your dealer shot you isnt out of line..imo.
