You need to measure the shaft to make sure it is straight. If it is bent at all, then it may grind at the seal, ultimately causing it to fail. The good news is that it won't fail in a way where it will snap off or anything, it will just leak out until you have no shock dampening. If the shaft is bent, then straightening it is still an option, but it will require some specialized equipment.

I would think the shafts can be replaced during a re-build at a much lower cost then replacing the whole thing.

My buddy just bent the shaft on one of his Polaris front shocks and he had it rebuilt with the new shaft only adding about $25 USD to the cost of the rebuild.
He needed both front shocks rebuilt anyway so it worked out great. Both shocks rebuilt and bent shaft replaced all for less than the cost of a replacement shock!

Probably best to get it rebuilt, but you can straighten them. A guy bent the shaft last year on Barnstormer's MXZ and we straightened it out within a few thousandths...some v blocks an indicator and a press. Still working fine with no leakage. But it wasn't real bad either.

If that is a KYB shock I don't think that you can buy a new shaft for it. Just had mine revalved by Shocktec and the shaft has some pit marks it. Brian told me that I would have to send the shaft out to be rechromed as you cannot buy parts for them.
