I was in the air up in a chopper today over a good part of the U.P. I spent a little extra time in Alger County to get a good look at conditions north of 28 from Wetmore to Grand Marais, Kingston Plains etc.. I have never observed so much unfrozen, standing water in the swamps, rivers, ditches, fields etc. at this time of year since I moved to the U.P. in 1989. South of M-28 is the same. The water along the Seney stretch is actually touching a couple of the railroad bridge deck crossings. The only worthwhile snow cover to speak of is about from Chassell north and west from there. I could tell they ran a few groomer runs in the Keweenaw but it looks slim. Dirt in many spots.
We need cold weather before snow, there is a lot of areas even if it snowed two foot would be impassible by sled until the water freezes. I would venture to say after seeing what I saw today and looking at the long range temps, the first couple of weeks in January are going to be bad sledding if even at all unless the unforeseen happens and we get a cold snap. Keep your fingers crossed. I like to think positive.
