I know this topic has been covered, but I couldn't locate the topic.
I have an 07 RTX and would like to cut two teeth off the gear to get an accurate speed. I know the gear sits behind and under the Sec. but how do I go about removing the gear first, and what do I use to shave off the teeth??
Is there a method to choose what two teeth to grind down?? Lastly is this something I could accomplish myself or better off to leave it for my dealer when he changes the oil soon as I put it away for Spring?
Thanks Doug

I haven't and won't do it myself, but it is an easy and simple job. Look at the shaft and see the bolt that goes through the gear. Remove that bolt and the gear falls off. To cut the teeth off, just use some kind of a grinder with a thin blade (to avoid damaging adjacent teeth). Something like a dremel or a die grinder. It doesn't matter what teeth you choose, just so long as they are evenly distributed around it. So for example, if you're grinding off two teeth, pick two that are about 180 degrees apart.
Note: I would never buy a machine that I could tell has been modified in that way (and yes, I would check) since it will record mileage slower than normal.

its a simple two min job 1- 14 mm socket remove the one bolt holding the gear in place and it will come off with the bolt then useing a dremel cut two teeth of(one from each side) then reinstall the gear.

It corrects the speed, but what about the milage it must be off to if the speed is?
Has anyone done the math or tested milage after grinding off 2 teeth off...

I tested mileage after grinding one off of mine. The speed was pretty close on GPS but the mileage was way down relative to the GPS. I took it off and bought a new gear.

So I assume that most people cut just one tooth off?
I'm confused! I just recently checked my ODO. with my Brother-In-Law who has an 07 Blizzard, and our ODO's were both the same. Will one tooth cut change the ODO by alot and put my Speedo spot on??? Thanks Doug

I ground out one tooth. If I recall correctly, that reduced the ODO reading by ~ 6% and the Speedo is still ~ 2% - 3% high.

I cut one tooth off the speedo gear on my '07 Attak after reading here on TY and seeing how happy the speedometer was. Last weekend I put the GPS on the sled before riding just to see how close things are. The dream meter still seemed to be 2-3 mph high at 70-80 mph and after 100 miles, the odometer was low by 4%, ie. it read 100 when the GPS said 104 miles traveled.

Ground off 2 teeth last year and MPH were within 1 of the GPS. Miles were way off though. This year I went to 1 teeth off, its not perfect but a compromise.
