so today I went to my dealer to ask if my 07 VL had the updated wire harness for the had warmers. And I was told all updates where done (bought sled use this spring) and he started reading some off and he said "cold start update". I stopped him and said I know for a fact this wasn't done because I just bought the ECM this past spring and it starts in 4 cranks now and before it was a least twice as many plus it had the old part #. Most of the work was done at another dealer in I assume Michigan where the sled came from so no blame on my dealer. What my dealer said they did I can see has been done. Still didn't get a clear answer on the hand warmer harness because I'm not sure if it was a required update. I orderd the harness just to be safe I hate cold hands. But anyhow pretty crapy deal on the cold start, I paid 150.00 for a used ECM and some dealer out there made $ off not doing it. Who know what else was or wasn't done.

Btw is there a web site that I can run my vin and see what's been done?

The cold start update was only done if the owner complained about it. It wasn't an automatic thing to do it. I had just bought mine when I brought it in for recalls and also asked about the cold start update. I had to fib a little that it was hard to start below -20C even though I hadn't ridden the sled yet.

As for the updated handwarmer harness, that one was not for our sleds. It was for 2008 Phazers with hooked handlebars. I tried that harness on my MP and it just made them too hot. It changes the wiring setup from each warmer connected in series (each gets 6V) and puts them in parallel (each gets 12V). I don't think it's necessary on our sleds as we have a great windshield and I never get cold hands, even in -25C. But they do get cold when idling. Foaming the bars helps a little.

I got the info and part # from a post under phazer general talk and it says 07. I just figured if the phazer had problems then so would the VL. I might hold off on installing the harness until I get a few rides in.

I put that grip harness on my dads 06 nytro and he loves it , his hands are much warmer , he runs it at 3 to 4 bars all the time on colder days alittle higher

Unfortunately, this stuff has been going on, at some dealers, of all brands, for a long time. I,ve been around dealerships for fourty years, and it,s another reason the price of sleds are where they are. I,ve always said that the consumer should have to sign off on the work order, and get a copy of it. A lot of folks might be surprised IF they knew how much stuff has been charged to their sled, that ended up on someone elses sled. Not every dealer is 100% honest.

I had a V-Max 800 that I bought new from a non local dealer and then had no contact with after the sale. The sled never had any warranty work done to it while I owned it. After I sold it to another guy he brought it to his local Yamaha dealer for service. That dealer looked up the history of the sled and found that multiple instances of warranty work had been submitted against the VIN during the time that I owned the sled including major engine repairs. The guy I sold the sled to brought this to my attention and accused me of lying to him because I had told him that I had never had any issues with the sled.

That was the first and last time that I bought a new sled from a non local dealer based on sell price alone. I have since bought all of my new sleds from my local dealer that I have now developed a relationship with and with whom I trust.

Wow, never even considered something like that happening, didn't even think it was a possibility. #$%&*

Guys sad to say but this happens all the time in the Auomotive business, dealerships send in false warranty claims to make ends meet. Its a way for them to make easy money. VERY SAD!

When was the last time you say this at a dealer???? You realize in the last 5 years dealer have to send the old parts back...... They will even measure the old gasket thickness to make sure it had been compressed and replaced

Dealers will do this for their good customers who's sled is out of warrantee to keep regular customers happy. It' not uncommon.

Do you go to Knapp? Bought my viper there back in 03 and other family members bought from him since I was so impressed with my sale. Haven't been there in a long time. I am planning on taking my rx1 there to have work done since all the northern ny dealers service department suck.

I,ve got a 2007 Apex RTX, and do all my own maintenance and repairs. I usually buy my parts on line, from the USA, cause they are about 40 % cheaper. I,ve bought stuff from Sovie Cycle in Potsdam, but he isn,t as cheap as what I can buy on line. I also buy stuff from Ulmer Racing. Great guy, great products, and very fair prices. I sent you a pm.

I work at a GM dealer and they very rarely ask for parts back. only thing that is ussually sent back is whole engines , transmissions, and most parts on brand new less than 10,000 mile vehicles. Especially on a brand new 1st year of a model, not sure how others do it but thats how its done with General Motors (Government motors)...
