Dealer sais 144 studs and a fourth wheel?

I think its a sucker part. Probably a lot of people look at it and see that its non-symmetric and *just want* a 4th wheel even though its not needed. It won't help alignment because the track would have to lift ALL the way across in order to derail - and if its going to lift all the way across, then the 4th wheel won't be stopping it.

I agree!!

I'll agree with you on that Lazy. When was the last time you saw that happen? Me, never.

It actually did happen to me once, BUT, it happened when I was using an unmodified hartman 144" extension kit (worst waste of $ ever).... because the damned thing would try to stretch the track out by A WHOLE THREE INCHES on compression, I had to have the tension backed ALL the way off in order to get it to compress reasonably... that track was REALLY dangling.

I spent good money on a 4th wheel kit when I studded my 700!

The only thing I think I got out of it was anticipation and more pratice dropping the suspension. :? It supposedly keeps track tension more uniform, so if I decide to turbo charge with race boost sometime in the future I will do it again. other wise I will just dream for free. I agree a waste of time, money and extra weight for trail riders.

I think that my SRX's came with 4 wheels? Now with such a cry about weight....they decided to leave them out.

Off Topic:

Are there windage plates on the Apex's?

You dont need it until a wheel goes in between a 100 mile from town to town stretch. My buddy had a rock get in there and took out a wheel - 3 works but not 2 - we took the 4th wheel out of my sled and installed the trashed bearing from his sled in mine as a shim - we both were back to 3 wheels and riding. Thats all I think there good for - we do some long canada no mans land trips - xtra parts doo come in handy -

I can see where adding the wheel would help to distribute the force of an impact more evenly, to prevent bending or breaking the axle bolt, should you land hard on the rear. Right Chris? :tg:

I just ordered the 4th wheel kit for my 05. After 10,000 kms (admitedly part of that was with a broken suspension), the track had stretched badly above the right and center rear wheel.

The stretching was bad enough that the lugs directly above these two wheels were actually falling off. Because of the way the track stretched around these two wheels it also flexed inwards rubbing the shock through. Also during the season I was constantly having to tighten the track as it kept stretching.

The 4th wheel kit will help distribute the load over the track better. How much extra track life I have no idea, but it should improve it somewhat.

The 4th rear wheel kit helps a lot. Not with derailment, never have seen that, but without it and studded you can get a lot of wear on the sides of the track lugs and the sides of the hyfax. Once you get wear there the sled does not seem to track a straight because the track can wonder back and forth on the rear axle.
The 4th wheel minor benifit is less hyfax wear in the rear on the one side.

The reason you need a kit is it contains tubular and washer like spacers to position the wheel. The big spacer where there was no wheel comes out. easy to put on but you have to pay attention when you take it apart to get all the spacers and washers in the right place
