So i got a billet yamaha gas cap for my 08 40th RTX......i try to spin it on, and it only goes about 2 turns (stock is 5)......i didnt think it was a problem till i took it out and rode it last night, and came back in with gas on the tank cover. So i bring it to the dealership i got it from and told them. They looked at me like i was nuts, so i said follow me, and i led of the parts guys out to the showroom and they watched me screw this cap, onto every single Yamaha sled they had on the floor, EXCEPT the 08 40th RTX......pretty cool huh. SO here i sit, no cap....and no explanation.

They cross thread very very easy. I had a similar problem on my 08, and my buddies 05 RX-1. If there is a slight little degree of angle as you twist it on, it will feel like it is on, and it won't be. They you back it off, and try it again straight (perfectly) and it will go right on. A pain in the A$$ when you have gloves on in the cold, But Pretty :o|

its not cross threaded....its just plain different....we tried several times, on 5 different machines....same outcome everytime on the 40th.

Which fuel cap did you get? Yammy offers 2 different styles?

Also did you try it on any other FX Nytros? Or just the Aniversary edition?

FYI - Many years ago when that style first came out (somewhere between 03-05) some of the early batches did have fitment issues. Not sure how long the dealer you got it from had it in stock or if they somehow ended up getting in some old stock but I do remember this being a problem on some of the early produced ones many years ago - haven't seen any lately being a problem at all over the last 3-4 years though. They would do exactly like you say - fit on some and not on others. I believe it had to do with the pitch of the threads and in the production of them after the first couple batches they loosened that up by creating a sloppier thread to cure the problem and allow them to fit as the tolerances on the factory tanks create a slight difference in the thread from machine to machine.
