I'm still hoping a cross plane crankshaft style 4 cylinder comes out on a sled. Now THAT is a sound that will sell sleds all on its own. Anyone that has not heard an 09+ R1 with aftermarket pipes needs to.
Plus that cross plane crank r1 motor makes great torque and would lend itself will to sled use.

Must agree with you that the cross plane r1 is the absolute best sound ever! Purpose of the cross plane engine in the r1 is smoother off/on throttle response rather than the instant jump in power from the 08 and prior r1 engines. Makes for a much smoother feel and more useable. That sound on a sled would be sweet but I don't think that will happen mainly because of the slightly lower hp the cross plane engine creates versus a standard inline 4 cylinder 1000 and ultimately in the world of snowmobiling, instant throttle response is what is being most sought after
idle, agree apex is sweet. Listening to it all day, not so much.

My friend brought his 2006 Apex 200 miles to trade for a Viper and after trying the Viper he bought a 2011 Apex. I am sure they are a great sled I have not had the chance to ride one, but on the big wide groomed trails of Maine he was very disspointed. Around town he loved it (except he complained his knees hit the plastic bodywork even harder than they did on his Rev) He said once he hit the open trail the clutching felt like mush and you really noticed the lower power. He also didnt like the exhast note, but I bet that its better than the tractor sound of the Arctic Cat LOL. I want to try one to make my own impression. I dont mind a little loss on top end I hear they will do 105 107 which isnt that bad, but we cruise at 70 MPH I need that adrenaline rush when I hit the flipper

I'd be curious to know how many miles the sled had that he tried. These things need some miles on them before they really start making power. If all you do is ride on long flat smooth trails then yes the apex is the better choice. But take a tight, rough trail or out on the hills boondocking the viper is hands down the way to go. I've only drove 1 new apex with power steering and that was a couple years ago but if my memory serves me right the eps apex still didn't steer or handle like the viper. I still noticed a decent amount of ski lift on the apex. Have yet to lift a ski yet in a corner on my viper and I've been riding it harder than I have ride any of my sleds in the past(solely because the sled can handle that type of riding, not because my skill level has gotten better)

I have not driven a new Apex, but my wife has a Vector LTX and granted it's slower, but same chassis. And my Viper is way better. Maybe not a smooth and relaxed on wide sweeping trails. But anything else the viper is the way to go. Now with my Turbo I don't think I should have any problems beating a 800 e tec or anything else out there except a modded f1100. And unless I over heat mine or run out of oil. Mine has a 5 year warranty. And I have that in writing. I think turbo sleds are fun as hell and I love it! Fast smooth and with some more tweaking it will be perfect! I don't care about all these little complaints people are having. Everyone has them on all sleds. Beat them all weekend then maintain then and you will be just fine.



I agree my sled at the 400 mile mark is completely diff than out of the box. And you do have to play with all of the shocks and other available adjustments to get it to what you want. These sleds are very tunable especially the LTX.
There is no comparrison between the Apex platform and the viper as far as rideability IMO. The transfer from sitting to standing is easy and I am not forced to hunch over the column to ride it. The Apex with EPS may be a bit easier on the arms but there is very little steering pressure required on these. I am running double 6" carbides in the front and can steer it with 2 fingers.
I am 51 yrs old with 2 bad discs, both hips need replaced and one knee has tears in both MCLs and the ACL I have sat in an office chair for 5 months 16 hrs a day 7 days a week. I went on the ride this weekend and we logged almost 400 miles in 2 days and I have no arm pump, no shoulder stiffness. The only thing that will take time is the throttle thumb but I am looking into a lighter return spring for that.
I will grant you this that the XTX is NOT a pure twisties machine but from corner to corner with the turbo it is balistic! I am working on the rear skid set up and am getting closer but am going to change out the rear fox float to be able to create more nose pressure with softer valving for the big bumps.
