try to explain with my bad english.. My xtx 141 le has 250 km now. Early I noticed that it rattled much more than my Viper. When I check my primary clutch, it has a "freeplay", like it was on a splines and note a tapered kone. I estimate the freeplay up to 5 mm on the shaft. (Not in and out, but forward/backwards.) How could you not get a ratteling clutch with this kind of freeplay? Or is My enginge other then yours? Do you have this freeplay?

Never heard of such a thing, that means your taper is wrong, must be to big a taper on shaft vs clutch taper,so only thing holding on the clutch is center bolt? Have you removed the centerbolt, and tried to remove the clutch by hand?

I haven't removed it. Only felt on it with a tool, that it wasn't loose. It feels like it's on a splined shaft, with to much freeplay in the splines..

Done retorque now. Was not tighten as spec. Did not take away the "spline freeplay" that i talk about. Triedto upload a video to show you.. but to tricky.

Try to upload a video, I'm sure someone will verify if loose or normal

Here is a short clip.

I got a feeling this might be your answer. A guy on another forum posted this, so if it is true it is perfectly normal.

" If the new motor is set up like the Viper motor there is coupler from the crank shaft to the clutch taper. There will be a little slop in it. "
For the sake of every owner, I sure hope this is true, and gives you some piece of mind.
Please post what your dealer finds.

You can green locktite the stub shaft on and hang a weight on a wrench so it pulls to the drive direction and the clutch rattle is gone.

Ok, thank you guys, I'll try to turn My ears the other way and not listen so much. It's an old habit from My son's motocross racing to listen after noise to prevent failures. Just ride and be happy. I'll talk to My dealer about it When time comes for first service. Give you an update then.

Again, I found this posted on another site. " on these motors the crankshaft is splined on the pto end, there is a short coupler with 2 heavy ball bearings which slides onto the crank on the inside and has the clutch taper on the outside. the free play you feel is in the splines, this is normal. RW "

Ok, good to know that nothing is about to break..
It seems like the spline tolerance may vary, my Viper did not rattle half as much...
On the other hand did it only performe half the Power ;)!

Was just checking out my sled after putting on some miles this past weekend. Put my hands on the primary and I can move it forward or backwards let's say 1/16 - 1/8". More on the 1/8 I would guess. Anyways this movement is not from within the motor. The inside sheave stays perfectly still while the outside sheave, cover and spider move back and forth!

No wonder this thing sounds like a diesel. I have heard different variations of why this clutch is loud on this site, but I guess I wasn't understanding the different reasoning as to why. Service guy at dealership talked to the tech, and he said yeah that is normal because of the way the clutch is now splined instead of being smooth shaft.

Huh, shall have to take a peak at a clutch breakdown on partshouse site.

I know they (sidewinders)are all loud and probably all have this free play but wow, have had Yamaha's all the way back to 84, 70s if you want to count Roloflex with Yamaha 443 motor, and have never experienced this.

Who has broken down primary? Is it really a splined shaft doing causing this?
