i was wondering if anybody is going to change their oil and filter before 500miles. i got 225 and am thinking i will do it now at home in the garage, because my next trip could very well go way over 500 miles and im not changing it in the snow up norrth

I changed my oil at 200 miles and then again at 500 miles. Never hurts to change the oil a coup le of times early on, especially if you are going to keep the sled.

Unless you are riding your sled on the dirt there is no outside contaminates to dirty the oil. A 4 stroke as long as it is running properly doesn't push any contaminates into the oil and the only reason they call for the 500 mile oil change is to remove the filter and the break in oil at 500 miles or so to remove any honing debris from the ring and cylinder breakin. Just changing the oil and not the filter gains you nothing but the cost of the oil. & if you change the oil and filter at 200 miles youre gonna want to change it again around 500. I would not sweat going over the 500 miles just as long as you werent going up to 1000 before the filter change. Did mine at 620 on the 03 and she still burns only 1/4 of a quart per 1000 miles and filter changes are noooooo fun.

Also if you change the filter now,it really makes no sense to do it over again in another 250 miles or even 1,000 So by going 225 miles she is all broke in as far as the rings are concerned, and this is the main reason to change the filter this is just my opinion, but i think you are better off changing it now than waiting till 700-800 miles..

I agree. Doing it at 225 would serve the same purpose as doing it at 500. The majority of break-in of metal parts is done already. Do it now - and then don't worry about it again until after the season is over.

I will be changing my oil and filter after the first set of break in runs (probably about 30 miles) again at 500 or so, then switching to synthetic (Mobil 1) at the end of the season. You guys probably think I'm wrong but this strategy has a long proven track record for me and I won't change a thing.
