FAQ: What conditions does Yamaha fuel injection adjust for?

Those in the know does it adjust for:
Air temperature?

Air density or atmospheric pressure?

Humidity?

Fuel quality?

Detonation?

Engine temperature?

All of the above?

Do they run a closed loop FI with oxygen sensor?
 

The CO adjustment allows you to make minor adjustments to the fuel map for each cylinder, individually.

There is no O2 sensor. Not sure what that would add.

There is no knock sensor. Not sure why you would need it on a 4-stroke.

Fuel quality is handled by the Operator. You put in 87 octane. These guys do not need or like higher octane.

The other conditions are monitored and directly factored into the ECU.
 
O2 sensor monitors the burn - so that if you are too lean or too rich - the computer automatically switches to either a richer or leaner fuel map to re-establish proper burn - (a mustang 5.0 for example has this feature and many other newer vehicles now) this feature allows the owner to improve/modify intake, exhaust, camming, timing and fuel pressure and yet the computer automatically self adjusts to re-establish proper tune so there is no jeopardy or compromise(within reason or certain limits!).

Knock sensor - similarly backs off the timing to prevent dangerous "pinging" from insuficient octane again to protect you against bad gas. For example if a gas station has "old" gas from the season before the motor recognizes this and accomodates the situation by "backing off the timing". You can control the gas you "think you are putting in" but you can't control whats in the tank at the Gas Station for example. For the high miler, many run into this when gassing up at resorts which are season sensitive. Four strokes need anti-knock measures almost as badly as 2 strokes for an aggresive rider!

So to answer your question, beach - this is not the best set-up like in the automotive...and it's not a closed loop system...or self adjusting for that matter(well a bit) but not like the cars...You would figure the price we pay for these F'n things that the manufacturers would oblige - but between you and me - they rather we grenade our motors etc...

Especially if you modify flow in any way(this jeopardizes the ultra safe factory tune) Depending on your dealer(these guys aren't stupid either) you can end up footin the bill completely for your repair.

So if you modify flow - be prepared to re-tune your sled yourself(re-tune your computer settings) or deal with a "very reputable aftermarket" company which know what they are doing and could offer fuel and timing maps...
