A Sault Ste. Marie native, from Buckley, MI was killed this weekend when he ran into some un-marked barbed-wire. The injury lacerated his jugular.

My co-worker went to school with the man, and happen stance has it that he hit her uncle's fence. He was riding off-trail, near a pipe line. She is not defending her uncle, but the fatality might have been prevented by marking the wire fence with orange ribbons, AND operating more cautiously.

PLEASE BE ALERT TO YOUR SURROUNDINGS, ESPECIALLY AROUND FARM FIELDS.

Thats a terrible thing, I am sorry for the loss.

Unfortunately I cant see farmers running out and marking fence for sledders, imagine carrying rolls of tape for dozens, sometimes hundreds of miles of fence.
There are farms here that seed over 30 sections of land, it would take hundreds of man hours to do that.
Was it foggy, just over a hill, in trees, any more info?

You simply must know the area you are riding in and if not you MUST go slow. I have heard of lots of sleds running into barb wire fences. It is usually not nice and like Ken said farmers are not going to mark their fences.

Threads not about farmers marking the fences. It's about being cautious around their fields.

I think Ken and I are commenting on your original post where the fence and the preventing of the accident by marking the fence was mentioned.

This almost happened here, but the best part is the farmer put the barbwire across the trail that was already marked. My friend who was leading, came up to it, and turned just in time. We had some rope, so we wrapped it around the barbwire, and notified someone. Talk about brains!

Well I posted prematurely because the fence was laying down under the snow, on purpose. Not sure of the purpose other than he took it down, but my co-worker tells me other people, including herself have hit it before and her uncle was asked to at least take care of it cause it was too close to the pipeline trail and people were hitting it. The area isn't posted either. The tragedy is, the guy didn't/couldn't see it to know it was there until it was way too late.

In this case, he knew about the danger and didn't do anything about it. But I aint blaming this on the farmer. I'm merely stating something more could have been done.
