We'll boys, finally stopped analizing pros and cons between Apex, Apex SE and Apex XTX. Chose the XTX, picking it up Tues. Haven't been this excited since . . . . . well, I don't know when! Can't wait to get it on the trails and dial it in. Asked my dealer to suck the limiter straps one hole tighter, not to overtighten the track and set the suspension on the stiff side for my 280 lbs.
Gonna wait on the studs and see how she handles stock, I have studded every sled I've ever owned but I'm a little bit leary after reading about the damage some have had, XTX seems to be the most stud freindly but I'm going to check if I need shimmiing before I do anything.

Great choice! I drove both the XTX & std Apex today - the XTX shoots straighter (no see-saw back-n-forth like a shorty) with no apparent loss in cornering ability & handles bumps way better. The major drawback may be premature hyfax wear (based on the reports I'm seeing here on TY).
For what it's worth (probably not much), the Yam rep said the tunnel protectors only flex under 'extreme' riding circumstances & the average trail rider won't have a problem with only shimming. Time will tell on that one.
These new '11's are amazingly superior to the previous generation Apex's!
Not sure where you ride but I'm told the trails around Rangeley are excellent!

Thanks, definately watching the hyfax. i'll be riding up in central Maine and so. NH.
Hifax burns fast at first, but then just stops and is ok.Bigger wheels may help that initial wear, but it is not a big deal

On my attak 2 years ago I cooked a new set (2nd set on the machine) of slides in 1 day of hard running. My first set had lasted 2 years. The 3rd set have now been on my machine & still good after 6000 km. I have had bigger wheels since I got the sled new.
I believe the trick is letting new slides set up properly. On the 2nd set we ran some long hard miles & never made it a point to stop every 10-15 miles to throw snow on them & really let them cool off. I had smelled the slides most of the day but never really thought about it since we had lots of snow for lubrication. Not until I looked at them the next day before my next trip (that trip ended up being delayed to have new slides put on).
This 3rd set, I made sure to break in easy the first 2 days. Run for a bit, stop, kick snow over the full length of the hyfax, let it cool down & repeat for a day or 2. Every 10-15 miles seems to have made a big difference. Checked them today, before I went out, & still lots of room left & this is about 6000km or 3600 miles later.
New slides seem soft, but when they set up properly they really seem to harden up & I have had good luck with them. Hopefully this helps.
Enjoy the new sled.

I'll check it out stock first, want to see how bad it is. I run Simmons on my Apex's but might try the doulies. I've read that woody's stop the darting but some say they push in the corners, others prefer Stud Boy Dueces???
X2. Stud boy dueces!

Terminator, How much did you pay if you don't mind me asking. The prices seem to be going down. I have been checking out the XTX around here and I can now get a red one for 11,700 plus 210 freight and prep. Plus 7% sales tax. The SE is now at 12,200.

Don't mind at all fourload, prices have dropped enough that I had to pull the trigger. Mind you I swore I would not pay 14K for a f'n sled! Some of you will be sceptical but I got my XTX for 11K even out the door, no BS!

Thanks, That is a great price!!! My wife is a PITA when it comes to me getting a new sled too. She will say : What about my new kitchen???? There are quite a few unsold ones around and I think the dealers are getting nervous... Might be pulling the trigger soon myself!!!!
Congrats !! It just keeps getting faster and faster every ride. Since installing the Excell wheel kit I have not noticed any wear on the new Hyfax. Save yourself the frustration and install a set before you ride it. You saved enough to pay for them

X2 on the Excel wheels. Bought my XTX with 330 mi. on it and the hyfax were at the line. Put on Excel wheels before my 1st trip.... and they are still at the line. I go 300lbs suited up so I am HARD on slides. All of my sleds have Polaris wheels on them. All of them go min. 1 season on a set of slides. Oh, by the way, my wife TOLD me to get the new sled! I'll be keeping her
