hey new to this forum but i've been over at the sled site for awhile.
Question is on finishing a battery, i have a 2001 kodiak that seems to be draining batteries and when i talked to a mechanic at the yammy dealer he said that normal chargers won't work as they don't finish the battery off, is this acurate? Also said that the kodiak has a 18 volt battery and that is why they won't finish it. i realize that i have to find the answer to my drain but is there a charger out there that will finish the battery or what has everyone else been using?

By "finishing"do you mean charging the battery? I use a charger called the Optimate III. It has a special way of charging batteries and it can and has recovered batteries for me that other chargers would not charge. It's a little pricey $65 but for me it has paid for itself many times with the batteries it has saved.
If the charger won't charge the battery, hook up another battery up to the dead battery in parallel then hook your charger to it to fake it out. Sometimes you can get them to charge that way.
I wouldn't think that your battery is 18volt, I've never heard of that on an atv but I would put a volt meter on it and check it out. Good Luck

What ever that guy is smoking I want some, But back to your question, ATV and Snowmobile or just small batteries need to be charged slow 1 or 2 amp charge otherwise overheating can occur which will melt the plates together shorting out your battery. You can use a big charger if it has low settings, A battery tender is ideal.

he was saying that the battery even though it has acid in it becomes a dry battery and when it becomes drained the cells lose the energy and the cells start to develop a scale and if you don't "finish the battery" the scale won't come off and the cells won't fully charge. Will a 1 to 2 amp charger accomplish this or is this mechanic leading me a stray?

That is true about the plates. Add distilled water and The battery will need to be desulfcated. That's exactly what the battery charger I have does.

I know you can but them through Dennis Kirk or any Yamaha dealer.
