Fit and Finish

Hey Gang, Was at my local dealer today checking out the apex. I have a question about how a part fits/connects. The part in question hides the radiator/fan and is directly above your right foot sitting on the sled. It's black and loovered(sp?), horizontal slots for air flow. It appears that the bottom left section of this piece uses velcro or similar substance to hold it in place. Has anyone noticed this? How well will it stay in place while riding? Just doesn't seem up to Yamaha's quality. Maybe just too much of a perfectionist.

I must say that after going over my new RTX for the past week that the fit & finish is nowhere near what it was on my '03 RX-1. The velcro tab that you mention doesn't stay locked together on my sled while its just sitting still in my garage. I certainly won't stay together while the sleds bouncing down the trail. Another thing I noticed is that the sleds nosecone/front bumper are about a 1/4" off center from the hood. One thing that all new Apex owners should look at is the assembly of the headlight/gauge/windshield pod. I found a tab along the side of the headlight that holds the windshield tight to it, wasn't connected which left a large gap between the edge of the headlight and the windshield. And finally the sled will be going back to the dealer next week for its first warranty repair (my first ever on any Yamaha I've had) because one of the brass inserts for the screws that hold the chrome collar around the steering column is stripped out, and I can't get the collar off. I have no question that this sled will be rock solid reliable, but I think they may have overdone it a bit with all of the interlocking removable plasic panels.

My Attak is the same way. Are all the Apex sleds like this?

agreed, the velcro didnt make me all that happy. well just have to wait and see. no real other comlaints though.

Ya,, when i saw the velcro i thought... you mean to tell me yamaha would give up some of its fit and finish to save 1/4 of an ouce of weight..

I hope they end up coming up with a fix for that!

i noticed my friends' apex er is the same way, about a 1/4" or more to the right from center

I haven't removed mine because I found I could remove the top cover and gas tank cover without taking the collar off. However, I did put a scredriver on one of the screws and it just turns and turns without going anywhere. Is that what you found? So that screw goes into a brass insert is that correct? Let me know what parts they replace for you to fix it. I was going to ignore it because the collar seems perfectly snug - but perhaps I'll have it fixed also.

Anyone else find that the screws in the plastic chrome collar are stripped?

Vice108,
That's exactly what is wrong with the chrome collar on my RTX. You put a screwdriver on the screw and it just spins while making a neat clicking sound. It's the sound of the brass insert grinding away at the (also) plastic housing that its supposed to be gripping to. I tried to get the top cover off without removing the collar, but didn't see how it could be done without scratching up something. How did you get your cover off?

Same thing here. got the cover off by removing the gauge pod.(the two bolts holding the pod were sort of cross threaded, had to repair with a tap & die).Used a mirror & a pair of pliers to grip the plastic around that brass nut that was turning 7 was able to remove the plastic ring.Don't know how to lock that brass nut in place in future .Will be talking to my dealer. Also the clip that holds the nut for the two bolts that secures the gauge pod are not spring steel & easily come off the housing when you remove the pod.

Sitting on sled right screw turns on mine. Also check the cover on rear of tunnel that covers the radiator hoses. Screws are under tunnel 10mm, I was missing 1 screw and 2 of the metal clips were pulled through the plastic and 1 was missing completely. This is on an Attack.

If you remove the headlight/guage pod you can then get both top panels removed without taking off the "chrome" ring. Attached is a picture of mine with them off. Note: the headlight was put back in place after I removed the panels.
