I've been in northern Maine for 3 days now and the last 2 have been real good. On the 26th I thought we could start down at Houlton but they had 2" of rain around the 24th so the trails were ice. At that time we decided to head up to Caribou with the truck and sleds which was suggested to us by BETHEVIPER. Thanks Scott. Scott also helped us register our sleds while we were in Houlton. Very much appreciated since we didn't know much at all about the area.
Once we arrived in Caribou on the 26th the snow was much better. We stayed the night and the next morning we headed here to Fort Kent. Boy it sure is nice up here along the St. Lawerence River. It snowed about 4" on the 27th and it is snowing right now on the 29th. This storm will be dumping another 5" or so. I would guess that there is 3' to 4' of snow total if you were to step off of the trails into undisturbed snow. It's nice so come on up.

awesome snow for sure.............we lost a little rhe other week because of some rain though but theres still tons. By the way I think you meant St John River?? Enjoy the area

Yea your right about the St. Johns River. Today we are going to try to make it to the top of Maine via ths Escort Trail. We're going to gas up in St. Francis and head north then turn around. I don't know if we will make it to the border or not. I thought we could do 75 miles then turn around and head back. We're going to stay at a cottage tonight that we passed on the trails a couple days ago. The folks have one availible for 2 nights. Looking forward to the cabins tonight.

Are u talking about the crossroad cabins in fort kent..........owned by Kevin and Cheryl. Those cabins are right next door to my sisters house. Real nice place to stay.

No, I was talking about Camel Brook Camp just outside of Ft. Kent. Take ITS85 west on the railbed a couple of miles until 85 makes a hard left (soutj) at the fork of ITS92. Head south on 85 out of the woods to the first clearing and they are on the right. Camel Brook has a sign on the ITS85 trail. The cabins are on the right side of the trails when you are heading south. Go back 100 yards to the cabins. The one we stayed in can sleep six and cost us $92. Gene the owner of Camel Brook has different size Cabins that can sleep up to 14 people if I remember correctly. I can't remember what the price on that cabin was but $120 seems to ring a bell. I'll come back and post a telephone number later incase anyone would like to call Gene. Super nice guy that want to rent his cabins. Today is +5 degrees at 10am. Heading to Van Buren.

Yeah I know where your talking. Jean is a real nice guy. Was my shop teacher in high school and has some really nice camps.

Well we went to Van Buren on Wed. and that place was a ghost town. Nobody outside and everything was closed on New Years Day, can you believe that. Everybody was inside watchin TV and keeping warm :drink: .
So we decided to head back to the area that served us lunch. Yep I'm talking about the Sportsmans Club on Long Lake. Ken there at the Sportsmans Club and also Paul from the Golf Club hooked me up with Bill & Jean that own Long Lake Camps right there on the waters (ice) edge. We rented a small cabin there on the lake for 2 nights and what a time we have had the last couple of days just hanging around the Long Lake area.
We left this morning from Long Lake Camps and it was -5 degrees. Stopped over on the other side of the lake to say goodby to Al at the Golf Club and also grab a late breakfast. What a super nice guy and he has some GREAT food. We headed back to Caribou to load up the sleds and warm up the truck. My truck bed was full of snow along with the hood & roof. Now I'm in Agugsta and I'm not looking forward to the 24 hour drive back home in the next couple of days. You play you pay!
