The good, the bad, the ugly...

I just got back from my annual Christmas-New Years trip to Rhinelander, WI. Although this year we didn't stay through New Years. Coming from Chicago we didn't see ANY snow till just south of Wausau. Trails opened in Oneida County on the 22nd. We got on the trails the morning of the 26th and obviously were one of the very first people this season. The trails were ungroomed at least in the Rhinelander area. We came across ALOT of slush and standing water on the trails. Because of this the groomers were unable to come out just yet. Before we got up north there was a "heatwave" for a few days causing the ground to melt. That night (Dec 26th) we got about 8 inches of snow and the temperatures dropped back to normal. We put on a few hundred miles only half of which were on groomed trails. Many trails and sections were just got groomed or even open due to water. Overall id rate the trails in "fair" condition, in the Rhinelander, Three Lakes, Sugar Camp, and Eagle River area. The new snow and the colder temperatures will help the trails ALOT. Id say after New Years they will be in great condition. I must add where we were staying was probably the most southern county that the trails were even open in Wisconsin. From what I've heard from others the conditions just got better the further you went north.
