found one of these in the bottom of tmy 2011 Apex when i was doing my oil change. looked everywhere but could not find where it came from. i also checked the microfiche and couldn't see this part anywhere. looks like some kind of retainer but to what? any help would be greatly appreciated

Yup. I found them when I was replacing my bushings. They were laying on the bottom. They are a retaining clip and they go on the bolts that hold the steering pivots in the center of the sled. The bolts face the front of the sled and they have grooves on the end that those slide onto. I have not been able to get them back on yet as it is tight in there.

OK thanks MrSled

i see it now on the microfiche ( part #48). what exactly does it do (i'm thinking like a cotter pin of some kind) because i've already put my sled back together. does it attach to the bolt before inserting into the arm pivot assembly between the bolt head and the flat washer? which by looking at the microfiche is the way it would go or does it go on the end of the bolt like a cotter pin would since the bolt is threaded into the bulk head? wondering how this would have fell out when i was just moving the wire harness around at the bulk head when getting ready to undo the filter when i heard it hit the belly pan.

much appreciated

thanks vader and thanks for the pic. i just happen to look in the album and there they were. have you had any problems running without them? if that is where they go I can't see them doing much. they sure wouldn't keep the bolt from backing out and i'm sure they are not some kind of spacer. i did remove the 2 bolts on the pivot arm to grease and reinstall. didn't see one on the other one so it must have fallen out as well.

I have only ran it 70 miles so far as snow conditions have not been great. I honestly don't know if they were already off or if I knocked them off when I took it apart. I cannot see that they do much either but I am a little worried they serve a bigger purpose than I can see or yamaha would not have put them on. I am just not sure how to get them back on at this point without tearing things back apart. If you run a magnet down in the belly pan you might be able to pick up the other one.

i agree, they are there for a purpose but like you i don't want to tear it all apart just to try to reinstall them. i heard the one i found fall out when i was moving the wire harness around. if the other had been in place i would have noticed where it went. i did notice before undoing the bolts holding the pivot assembly that the one with the pushing had a little movement in the bushing so that is why i removed it to check it and greased it. The bolt was tight thou without it so never thought anything of it and just reinstalled it with approx the same torque and the little movement was gone. the other one has a bearing but it was just as tight so all i did is regrease it and did the same as the other. the 2nd clip is either underneath the motor or it fell into my used oil because the bottom was open. i'll check the old oil with a magnet and see if i can find it just so i have it.

i'll just wait until next fall when i change the oil and take a look at it them. i don't see me doing a whole lot of miles this year with this crappy winter were having anyways.

much appreciated
