Just wondering, I'm not sure! Can you use 87 Octane in the RX1?

That's what Yamaha recoomends. No benefit to running higher octane fuel since this is not a high compression engine. If you have your owners manual it will say which octane fuel to use.

I ran 87 in my RX-1 last year with no spark knock, just a smoother than silk engine :D

IT IS A HIGHT COMPRESSION ENGINE at 11.8 to 1 compression

But runs so effeciant that it doesnt need hight octain to run!

High compression in terms of 2-strokes.

4-strokes are competely different animals. That is NOT high compression for a 4-stroke.

88 octane recommended because in Japan they sell 86 and 88. In north america they sell 87 and 89. They ALWAYS leave some room to mess with.

11.8-1 is very high in any terms!!

I run 10.3-1 in my race car with aluminum heads!! (chevy 350, 425hp)

The most compression you can run (safely)in four stroke car engine is 9.5-1 with iron heads!! Then you come close to detination!!

you can run 10.5-1 compresson with alluminum heads and higher if you have Fuel injection to help keep it rich when it needs to be and lean when it needs to be!!

The cam profile can make up for compression!! A longer duration camshaft LOWERS static compression and a shorter duration camshaft can RAISE static compression!!

The reason the RX-1 engine can get away with such high compression is the Good head design (5 valves per cyl) and engine being made out of Aluminum!! that helps disapate head which causes detination!! :D

GITTYUP welterracer thats some good info :D Its good to know we have people like you and so many others on this site that can share there expertise
