Are all 3 filters the same? I had changed the one on the pump but never thought about he 2 on the feeder lines.

Looking for a little clarity on the fuel “socks” before I take my tank apart on 17 sidewinder. Why 3 fuel socks? Are they fastened down in the tank or just floating around. Are they easy to change ? Is there another filter near the engine?. I’m not having any issues but want to be pro active and clean or change out the filter(s) since my sled is now getting up there as well have 17,000 km on it.

There are two filters on a Y supply line to the pump, which has another filter. The original way the two feeder filters are fastened on are with crimp/pinch style clamps, like the pex type for household water lines.PEFI sell the filters with new clamps and a new pump filter as a kit if you're looking to swap out them all.Looking for a little clarity on the fuel “socks” before I take my tank apart on 17 sidewinder. Thanks Four barrel.
So basically there is 3 points for picking up the fuel, for redundancy I guess.?

2 points of pickup, being the Y supply line, and the pump,so 3 points of filtration. But the filters are only so affective and some debris does get by,which is why it's good practice to remove the injectors every so often and have them cleaned out and flow tested. Thanks Four barrel.

The (filters) on the end of the Y hose and the one on the suction end of fuel pump are really only "strainers" meaning they will strain out the bigger "chunks" but are not fine fuel filters. Those strainers will stop particles about 45 micron and larger.
I have routinely had my injectors ultrasonically cleaned and flowed. The first time, one injector was down about 7-8% in flow - certainally enough to be big trouble for my tuned engine. Since then (2018), I have installed a stainless steel cleanable in-line 10 micron fuel filter. My injector cleaning company told me anything larger than about 30 microns will clog/restrict the injectors in the 998 engine. Now I ride in complete confidence that my injectors are at max flow and cannot be restricted. Important for a Stage 4 tune (really any fuel injected engine). I can clean the element in my fuel filter in 5 minutes and re-install it. Easy.
In summary, the strainers in your fuel tank (both Y tubing and fuel pump) are only good down to about 40-45 microns.
The fuel injectors will be affected (accumulate debris, flow restrict) starting at about 30 microns. Anything smaller than about 30 microns will pass through the injectors without consequence.
Question: How clean is the gas you buy?
P.S. After I installed my 10 micron in-line filter and rode for a whole season, I sent my injectors in for inspection/cleaning/flow analysis. To my satisfaction, my injectors had no contamination or flow restrictions at all. All 3 were 100%. Conclusion: my 10 micron filter is 100% effective at protecting my injectors from contamination. Stock Cat fuel system has design inadequacies that could (likely have/will) cause engine issues.

T F very good advice and where did you install your inline filters that you can clean in 5 minutes and what brand and where did you buy I it.. At 10 microns that will do the job and I may have missed your link to it if you gave one…

Thanks Turboflash. I did read a few posts about the 10 micron filter and will order one to put on. I pulled my pump and the filters out of the tank yesterday and they were amazingly clean , for 8 years old. Tank was spotless.
Still very curious how the 3 filter screens work?? The main one attached to the pump is in a tube that can only get fuel if the tank is over 1/2 full and or fuel sloshes into it and the other 2 on the y pipe sit on bottom of the tank but are tee,d in after the pump??? Would love to know the theory behind this if anyone has some thoughts.

It works on the scavenge system. Kind of like a siphon to fill the cup that pump sits in.
This is the reason we do the relocation of the return line to dump above pump.
Pump can starve for fuel below 1/4 tank.

The banana shaped plastic basket the fuel pump is in has 1-way check valves at bottom which allows fuel in but not out. As pump runs, there is suction in basket which pulls fuel in. The other two strainers work as a scavenge system like 1nc2000 states. Many of us have revised fuel return system to return fuel directly into the basket thereby ensuring that basket is always full (overflowing) so the pump doesn't aerate when fuel level goes down. Thanks Turboflash. Jonlafon1 did a nice pictorial post on where/how to install. You could do a search to find it.

I just copied you! with a slightly different location, but could not agree more with these filters @ 10 micron. If your taking them out on the edge with tunes > keep your injectors clean. Todays gas? Questionable at times for sure.Jonlafon1 did a nice pictorial post on where/how to install. You could do a search to find it.
