I power my Nuvi GPS with a Smart supply from Rocztoyz through a conventional USB cable. Typically if you unplug the power cable or shut down the machine it prompts you whether you want it to stay on or shut down. I like it this way, but there is one thing that I don't care for. When I go to start the machine it reboots the unit and it enters PC communications mode.

I'm not entirely positive that this is my issue as the unit does go into navigate mode eventually, but this explains what I think I am seeing:
"The secret is in the 5th pin of a USB Micro B connector. A standard USB A cable has 4 pins and 4 wires. The 5th pin on the Micro B connector is not connected to a wire and thus does not go back to the plug end (USB A). It connects with internal circuitry that powers up a signal that tells the processor that it's not in data mode."

Shorted pin 4 to 5 as indicated at the above link. Now the GPS boots into map mode directly

That is good info as I try to use the car adapter to keep it out of PC mode. I initially used a DC/USB adapter and the more stout USB cable. But it kept doing this as well. So I purchased another third-party car adapter and it solved my problem. Good to know there was a workaround.
With the Smart Supply on the frame backbone right behind the steering post a simple 12" cable is perfect length.
The foil wad needs to be big enough to maintain contact but short enough not to hold the plug out. My first run in the field it was cutting out and rebooting constantly so I redid it and it worked flawless today on rough trails.
