I have a 18 SW LTX LE on order. I like my Montana mounted just above my gauges. In the past, I have powered thru the 12V plug. I want to hardwire the Garmin power mount to make it easier and more dependable. My question is how to wire it to a constant power source but also still remove the hood easily. Will I need a separate plug in addition to the main wire loom plug? Or is there a better idea? Thanks.

There is a connector down on the wiring harness that is for an electric shield connector. It is a two hole (or one hole and one pin) rubberized nature. I retro'd the Yamaha heated shield optional part to the Garmin power connector and just plugged it into the Yamaha wiring harness. Obviously, the other end to the Garmin.

I can take pictures tomorrow, but any Yamaha dealer should have those parts in stock or can get them easily. I ordered the Garmin power connector from an Amazon vendor. Slick as hell!

I ran a Nuvi 2597 (I think) on my left handlebar using a Ram mount and case with the Canadian Snow tracks maps for Ontario for 3,500 miles last season. Worked PERFECT!

most gps has a voltage reducer in the plug be sure you don't fry your gps by running 12 volts to it if it needs 3.5 or what ever.

Correct on the power reduction. The Garmin cable has that incorporated into it with a 750ma fuse to boot. I bought a few spares from an Amazon vendor and never popped one in 3,500 miles.

Thanks for the info. Pics would be great.

Is there a connection for a constant power so the garmin doesn't shut down every time I stop? (and not have to hit the screen for power to stay on)

I would have to admit that was a tad annoying, but more so because my Garmin battery was on its way out and would only run for 5 minutes in temps above 40, let alone 20 below!

I don't recall seeking a full time power once I became aware of the electric shield accessory connector.

I don't have pics as its away for the summer but installed aas Epicsw suggested but i also got the splicer plug so i can run this and the shield. Unit mounts above my gauge.
That being said im getting the new Next Stage Gauge for it once its available this summer that has the maps and more all in one tablet. Its pretty slick for $600
