Hey guys,
I am going to look at a 2004 RX-1 in a day or so. I have never owned a 4stroke. Is there anything I should look for specific to a fourstroke? Any problem areas? It has 2800miles. It comes with a new Ripsaw and 192 studs and has reverse? Any advice ot tips are greatly appreciated. Whats a good deal on it?(buying in Canada)
thanks

one thing is start it up-and let it warm up. but always check the exhaust comin out the pipes and watch for black smoke. most of the rx1's wont smoke but if this one does then i'd back away. is the sled fairly stock or does it have some mods done.

The 2004 RX-1 was pretty solid as Yamaha corrected issues found on the 03 model. These fixes included straight rate springs, links, sway bar, and slit in the breather hose. It was also the first year for the RipSaw track.
I believe 2004 was the first year that had the jack shaft bearing problem. You need to make sure this guy has had his jack shaft bearing replaced with the locking collar.

Engine wise I don't think you'll have too much to worry about. Definitely look for smoke like pimped suggested. The jackshaft should have the locking collar, as mine did when I bought it new.
Thoroughly look over the rear skid. Check the front pivot arm (W-arm) for cracks and rust around the welds. Check the shocks for leakage, and check the track for signs of delamination. Look at the ski spindle housings for signs of bending and check the bulkhead pivot points - the sled has a glass-jaw when it comes to slight frontal impacts.
Other than the low/stiff seat, and the weak skid, the '04 is a pretty solid machine. I prefer the Warrior as it has the longer track, better ride, and wider running boards.

its pretty stock... here is a picture of it.. It apparently has a new ripsaw track and 192 studs.. reverse, only 2,800miles though. I just got of the phone with him and he says the bearing has not been done. I just called my dealer and they said it nota huge deal to change it. They said and hours labour. Is $5000 canadian a good deal?

I have an 04 with 7,000 miles and no issues. Mine also came with the updated bearing, so you shouldn't have to change it yet with that kind of miles. $5,000 Canadian is a great price if it's as nice as you say. That would be about $3,500 US. Not sure that our US friends would agree as sled are cheaper in the US.

Sadly, yes $5000 CAN is a good deal.
I only say that because of what I have into mine. The bearing is indeed no big deal to change, if you get to it before it fails. In this case, I'd have that done anyway. I do mine at the start of each season now. Certainly nothing to lose sleep over.
I have 7,000 miles on my '04 too. I'd say that this is a perfect sled for Canadian trails.
Looks like a nice clean sled.

I forgot to mention.. buddy said the only problem he had with it.. was when her first had it out it got hot... and he took it back to the dealer and they put a rear heat exchanger and ever since it never got hot again. He did say there are few stud scratches on the inside of the tunnel.. I will need to see it to see how severe. Thanks for the info guys. Is it faster then my Viper? Will it pull nice wheelies? If it looks good.. I am going to get it and then sell my Viper come fall. The reverse is going to be a nice change.
I would love to turbo it. !

$5,000 Canadian is closer to $4500 U.S. which is where most 04's are priced plus no hassle crossing border. Very different from Viper as RX is a pure groomed trail machine while Viper is more versatile but a 2 stroke.

im not big into wheelies but that sled will put a smile on your face on the 1st hill you climb with it. i went from a 2001 sxr500 to my warrior. i have driven my brothers 2002 viper and the rx1/warrior will pull harder and smoother in just about any trail conditions. i drove a 2003 rx1 whitch is what made up my mind. it had 10,000km on it and was still on its origonal belt at the beginning of the day. you will enjoy that sled.

I bought a 03 in great condition for $4,000us. It has all the 04 updates done to it along with 192 studs. I have put about 350 miles on it and can't wait for winter to get here.
My 2000 SRX was alot more fun on the trails but a 4 stroke was something I wanted to try.

So I went and checked it out last night. The guy has it under a tree way out in his back yard.. The front end is all rusted.. Some tunnel damage underneath from stud contact. It had no coolant in the reservoir tank at all. It seemed to run ok.. The valves seemed kind of klicky klacky.. I think it's been drove hard and put away wet. I left it there. I want a clean one that been taken care off. I don't want someon else's junk. This one looks like buddy just left there last spring when the season ended. It turns out the picture is from when he first got it.
