I know this has been discussed on here numerous times, but I am having trouble on finding anything as far as a step-by-step goes. I know what I need to remove and how I'm going to do it once I have the muffler opened up, but it's getting it opened up that I'm not sure of. I can't find where anyone has specified where exactly to cut through the casing to get to the inside. I have also seen where some guys have come in from the bottom instead of the top, which is better??? Also, it looks like there is some sort of extra layer of steel tacked on the ouside as an extra heat shield or something....is it necessarly to put this back on as well???

Thanks BigDog!!! It looks like it doesn't really matter where you cut it, as long as the opening is big enough you can get in there to do what you need to do....the smaller the better I suppose!!! I'm still a bit curious on the two layers of steel though...but I suppose if you cut through both layers and then fold them back over the weld it shut, the inner layer will be sandwiched between the two supports inside the can and the outer shell that is actually being welded, so I guess it will be all good!!!! I'm not sure that that made any sense, but I think I have the right idea!!! I found that first post you posted the link to, but the second one I did not find...it is a bit more helpful I think!!!! Thanks again!!!

I trimmed the top layer down about 1/8" before i welded it back shut, so nothing would want to rattle inside. Its twice as much welded but i am happy with the result. Once everything is back together, i guess youll be the only one to know what it looks like.

Well, I went ahead and tackled the project!!! Only took about 2 hours from start to finish!!! I had pretty good luck welding it back shut with the MIG welder once I got my setting adjusted....I think I ended up with it running about 80 on the wire feed and about 12.5 volts....worked well without wanting to keep blowing through!!! I have the second coat of stove paint drying on it today and I hope to get it back in this weekend and hear the rumble!!!! Thanks for your help guys!!!!
