I was wondering how accurate this would be in the pocket of your jacket?? I have the Garmin which I bring up the top speed menu and go by that. Will this be a accurate reading if I only hold my speed for a few seconds?? I have read 108 on this gps but noticed the other day that it takes a while to get up to speed in my truck when I gunned it so I went on the interstate to see how it would be over a 100 since my speedo only goes to that. It read 117 in my truck but I only held there for probably 4 to 5 seconds a little longer than I would on the trail. Your thoughts and yes my truck will do it with my Westers garage performance tune.

I would think that if you have a good 3d fis it would be perfectly accurate. My 60CSX works fine in my pocket

I'm darn sure no expert, but thinking that a GPS is not 100% real time. It updates every few seconds. The speed you were running when it updated is what you'll see displayed?
If you were still accelerating, or if you had backed out of it when it updated last?

Thats kinda what I was thinking that it updates every few seconds so if you don't maintain that speed for say five or more seconds you may not have a true reading. If you watch the readout from a dead stop it is quite a bit behind. When I did a run on my sled I was still accelerating and then back off and back on it again. I think to get a true reading you would have to maintain the speed for several seconds or more any other thoughts??

not sure but I went across Lake wanapitea near sudbury wot with my garmin e-trex in my coat when i got back to camp removed it and it had a reading of 271 km/h as max speed, so somehow the signals must be able to get mixed up cause the sled may have been doing 171 at most.

I've had several different eTrex Garmins. I haven't found one yet that works well in your pocket, normally needs an unrestricted view of the satellites. There are other model hand held Garmins, especially marine style that have better readings when obstructed. As far as accuracy they are pretty close to spot on as noted running against radar. I have run 2 side by side and they were exact on speed and mileage. The altitude feature would vary by as much as 25 to 50' between the 2. I've had a couple of glitches as well, but being so far off that there was no question about being wrong.
Garmin 60CSx updates every 2 seconds. You need to run a constant speed for 2-3 seconds as that hand held has very quick update response.

I did the same thing. I was going 4594 mph as my top speed.
Must of had my rear suspension bang on.
What happens is it looses the satalite signal for a second and picks it back up at a location 50-60 ft away (as you are moving) and goes to that point instantly (0.01 s).
Just don't go bragging to the boys about it.

If you put it in your pocket chances are it won't be accurate as it can be.
The new Sirf Chip Sets use satelite signals that are ignored when it has a clear view of the sky. It figures these weak signals are better then nothing but the accuracy is far off. So your speed, etc. will be too.
If you want a rear good accurate speed readout your gps should have a good fix before you do what you are going to do as some data sent to the gps takes longer then 2sec.
tape it to something turn it on in the open for 3/4 hr. with WAAS on and then do the run. You'll have an honest read out.
If you had a good fix that day you wouldn't need to run it 3/4hr. but If you want excellent results do 3/4hr. Especially if you have the Garmin S models..as it can take an hour to hone in and give good readings with altitude etc.

If you can mount your GPS on the handle bars at about a 45 degrees and unobstructed, it will be most accurate. I used to ride with it in the pocket, then around the neck with the lanyard and finally got a mount. The angled mount gives you the best chances of accuracy with hand held units. I knew my new APEX could not do 327 kph
Darn it and was going to ask what gears you were running!
