Has anyone actually had their heat exchanger protectors cut out yet. My intense track will be in any day now and then my sled will go into surgery.
I'm a little worried about removing the protectors, but I understand that it has to be done for my 1.5 inch track.
I did notice that the MTX doesn't have them so I'm hoping it was just a studding precaution on the shorties.

No one has done this yet? Is anyone else planning on doing it? I could fit the 1.5 in, but I'm pretty sure it will rub. I don't see the point of notching the track, your gaining a 1/4 inch, but cutting half of it away.

I posted this pic last month. once the exchanger protectors are removed it appears the next tight spot is around where the tunnel/exchanger meet area. I have yet to remove my track but it clearly looks as if 1.75" WILL FIT once the protectors are removed. I think a 1.5" track will fit with the protectors still in. Maybe other that have actually tried it can chime in.
I would like to add that when we pulled the plastic off the frone heat exchanger is very thin (this may be normal to some of you guys but much thinner than others) Also for you guy that ride off trail... once you remove the stock bottom plastic and see the damage that can accure IF you were to hit something down there... The tub protectors should be selling like hot cakes!!

Now you got me worried 08NitroRTX. My dealer's mechanic doesn't think that the 1.5 will go in with the protectors in. I contemplated taking them out and cutting them down and having them welded back in, but it would be a bunch of extra work because the shop doesn't have a tig welder.
My dealer said he'd take his out in a heartbeat if he owned it and was going to a bigger track.
Do they actually protect anything? And if so, why does the MTX not have them?

As far as I know Goddo, they're there incase a guy decides to run studs in the track, which I never do. Obviously most guys on mtn sleds don't use studs either, thus no use of the protector. Regardless, I'm yankin mine out no matter what it takes !
***UPDATE***
Just called the dealer while writing this, he basically said to use a mini grinder with a fine cutting blade, and cut ONLY at the welds, being careful not to cut too far into the exchanger. Piece of cake !

The protectors are IF you are going to stud your sled. If you have NO plans to stud the take a peanut grinder and about 5 mins they'll be out! (After you remove the track)I will be removing mine when I install my newest track (I didn't like the first one I ordered so it'll go on one of the revs)

Thanks guys...That makes me feel much better. I thought it was for studs, and have no plans on studding.
I actually might be too late anyway. Just passed by the dealers and noticed that my sled isn't in the window anymore which leads me to believe they have her in the shop.

Tunnel protectors
Guys,
I have been down this road already.
I took my heat exchanger protecters out to fit 11 tooth billet drivers for the asphalt. Grinder & drill no big deal. But I run studs in the winter so I wanted to put them back in. I welded "quick" change brackets to the tunnel protectors (yeah right) there was nothing quick about it. It has been a huge pain in the but to convert.
I think if your spending the money on a track anyway. I recommend buying 8 tooth anti ratchet drivers, a fully clipped windowed track, and resize the top sprocket. (no grinding on your Brand new sled required) This will give you the clearence you need and eliminate the risk of damaging your front exchanger, Which if you have ever changed is a huge job.
Just my opinion. Good luck.

Thanks srx74,
I have actually already done the deed.
I think your advice is good...Especially for those considering studding.
I was a little worried, but when you look at the MTX, there are no guards, so I would image they were put there to protect from studs.

I am looking to do this to my 2009 xtx. Anyone know what the max lug size I can get on the machien after the modification? Anyone have a track suggestion? I am looking to have and least a 2" paddle.
Thanks

I think you'll be hard pressed to get anything deeper than a 1.75" into the XTX WITH the tunnel protectors removed. . . .and if it worked it would certainly rub against the front cooler when you're in soft snow off trail and you grab a hand full of "fun paddle" (track stretch/distension).
Would highly advise you take a serious look at putting on a 1.75" then put the rest of your efforts into clutching, skis, intake, exhaust, etc.
Just my 2 cents. . .
