I saw this on an E mail I received this morning:

Max Sled Snowmobile Weight Challenge Results

Last week we published part one of our Max Sled Snowmobile Weight Challenge. We talked about weighing sleds while they are "wet" and ready to ride on the trails. The article also talks about the costs associated with engineering sleds to be light weight. We aren't arguing that lighter isn't better, just that there are limits. Well, we also promised MaxBits subscribers that they would be the first to see our published results, so here they are. Our full-blown article with a complete chart will go live on Thursday, January 4th, so make sure you stop by www.maxsled.com for the complete article.

2-Strokes vs 4-Strokes Battle

If you would have asked me a year ago if I felt that 4-stroke engines would take over the snowmobile market, I would have certainly said "yes" with the advent of the Arctic Cat Jaguar Z1. But we are seeing quite a battle over this debate and there really isn't a clear-cut winner. Today I will say that this battle may go on longer than the war against terrorism. It's a fight that is not easily won and there are advantages to either technology. Even in the marine industry, as mature as that is, it's not clear-cut. While Yamaha, a company who has mastered 4-stroke engine technology, has made it clear that they are a 4-stroke snowmobile company, the other three aren't as clear. BRP has spent their R&D money on 2-stroke technology and they are clearly going the 2-stroke route, for now, but they also have 4-strokes in their PWCs that put out enormous horsepower. They also offer 4-strokes in some of their sleds, but nothing with performance that out-do their 2-strokes.

Arctic Cat is dabbling in both areas and we can't see which direction it will ultimately go and Polaris is leaning toward 2-strokes as well. I think it will come down to personal preference. We've seen the 4-strokes perform as well as their 2-stroke cousins and we've seen 2-strokes put out low emissions like their 4-stroke cousins. We will see powerful and lightweight 4-strokes and we will see powerful and long-lasting and low-emission 2-strokes. We will benefit, if for no other reason than we will see the best innovations and technology in both types of engines. So if there is a clear cut winner in this battle, it will be us, the consumers.

I thought it was interesting!

I put this info into an excel file and some of the numbers don't jibe very well with the advertised dry weights ... even model to model in the same brand. I can send the excel file to anyone who is curious, I added advertised dry weight and the difference between wet and dry...

for example:
ApexRTX wet 643.5lbs dry 539lbs diff 104.5lbs
Attack wet 647lbs dry 551lbs diff 91.5 lbs

I don't see how a sled with the same fuel/oil/coolant capacity as another similar sled gains 13lbs more than the other when wet.
Also, how does an mxz 550 fan gain 126.5 lbs when it has no coolant at all...

Snowgoer did an article recently where they measured dry weights and compared them to what the manufacturers claimed. Yamaha, on average, was 28.5 pounds heavier then claimed dry weight. They weighed the '07 RS VEctor ER, Apex GT, Attack GT, Phazer FX, Apex Mountain SE and the '06 Nytro ER. But they are not the only brand to do this, Arctic Cat was 26.25 heavier on average, Skidoo was 13.33, and Polaris was 11 pounds heavier then claimed dry weight, on average.

Bumping this. They said it couldn't be done. A COMPARIBLE hp 4 stroke that weighs the equivalent of 2 strokes. Well it's here.

I believe that Snowgoer said they weighed the 4-strokes full of oil and the 2-strokes with the minimum amount because thats how their shipped from the factory. Thats still quite a difference though.
