So I am looking at studs and I am on Fast Trac's site and they say a 1.375 stud and 196 for the Apex.

I have always put 144 in my sleds...

Whats the opinions here? Should I go 196 and can you go 196 without going on the ouside of the rail?

Do you guys stud on the outside?

Will I gain that much more of a hole shot with 196 or will the rotating mass take some top end away...

I am SURE this has been pounded to death...but I need some opinions please.

What are you guys running on the Apex?

Thanks,
SD

here we go again...
fwiw..I was talked into "162 up the middle" on my 136 skid..(the equiv of 144 for yours) on the last go round on this topic and it's the first time I have NOT studded on the outside...this might be best for casual trail riding ..

I understand some of the reasons RIPJUNK SOFT RUBBER PULL THROUGH POTENTIAL..yet dont agree with the "better handling" claim (see scott bergstroms website for good info)

Since I stud for agressive trail /lake...

I would never do another up the middle and feel 192 would be more my style..
also..I would only use a fast trac or similar style stud with a full 1" head and a large backer with a tall nut...

Thanks SJ,

Yeah I have had really good luck with Fast Trac's stuff...and they are right here in my back yard.
I really think I am going to do 144 again, But I would like more input.
I know the here we go again...
I did look for a thread I read back in September that had a lot of info in it... but I'll be darn if I can find it now...

I'll check Bergstroms site now...

Thanks

I run 96...leaves VERY well (surprisingly so). I did 4 every second bar with double backers and tall nuts....has worked great for 2 seasons.

WOW...96? I would think that track would spin like mad?

So far I am leaning 144...I think these stud companys just want to sell studs. I would bet a 144 would hook just as good at 196 on the average train. On good hardpack MAYBE there would be a difference. I thing the track is REALLY what bites. i can remember digging holes in a fresh hardpack with a non studded ripsaw. With the right conditions that track REALLY hooks up well...

I started off with 144 up the middle. Worked ok then i studded the outside band with 48 more all i can say is wow. I did not use the tall nuts I think a bent stud is better than a hole in the track. I run 1.375's If the trail conditions are thin I have to replace a couple every week or so from being bent. I have yet to have pullthrough. FWIW.

I have 192 woodys 1.450 in mine. It hooks like crazy. I only had a few rides on it last season with the studs but I found a great improvement. I did lose some on top end. This season I have a 23/40 setup with Ulmer stage 2 clutching.

I went from 144 to 162 and it make it slightly harder to stear and didnt make it lauch any better..

My new track will only have 144 studs.. best overall setup..

Thanks you guys. I know this has been all over these boards but I want to hit the Milwaukee show tomorrow and pick some up.

I am still leaning 144, but I may add some after I try the 144. I don't want to loose top end. I have to cats to catch this season. Maybe I'll just go Turbo and call it a day and not worry about the F1000's...

Just a tip...I have a hot poker that I use after I drill the holes. I get it glowing red and poke every hole to seal the cords back up in the track. I have never lost a track in 10's of thousands of miles of sledding by doing this. Just thought I would share...

By the way phazernut...does the woosys sizing run different? Wouldnt a 1.450 hit? Especially if you loosen the track a bit?
Looks like most run a 1.375's

You can't go wrong by going with 144 studs. I would recommend using the 1.450" studs as the 1.325" just don't get it done IMO.

I went from 168 to 144 up the middle. I like the 144 much better, 1.450 with medium tall nuts. The extra tall nuts do not grad enough threads on a stud this height, I made this mistake the first time I studded.

outside row is where its at with the right track!

1.450's would make me worry. I know with the 1.375's on the RX-1 I tore up my tunnel brace in no time at all. Had to snug up the track. I normally like to run it a bit loose. It even threw a few nicks on my exhaust.

I think some 1.450's are longer than others depending on the brand...

I have 144 woodys 1.325 and very happy with them and I have no problems
them pulling out. It depends on your style of ridding . The rule is inside for acceleration , outer edge for cornering and as many scratch lines as possible min 1/4 inch apart and 1inch from the edge the track. Here a guide.http://www.snowstuds.com/resources.html
