Help a friend with his 2008 Nytro RTX - before he trades!

I am a Vector LTX owner, and have no complaints about my ride.

However...

My friend bought a 2008 Nytro RTX and is fed up with it, and is ready to trade it in for an Ski Doo ETec. He was a Ski Doo guy before I convinced him to try a Yamaha. I told him I would look for help on TY before he makes any big moves.

Ever since he bought it, the ride has been very harsh, particularly on smaller, stutter bumps, which gives the impression it is set up too stiff. Yet, when going over big bumps, it will crash right through and bottom hard.

He is a 5'11", 185 lb. rider.

After buying it and realizing how stiff it was, he had all four shocks re-valved by Pioneer to Apex settings. This made the ride slightly better on smaller bumps, but not nearly enough, yet made the large bump bottoming even worse.

Let me describe as vividly as I can how it rides, as I have put some miles on it (I am 6'1", 215 lbs). With minor trail chop following an afternoon of moderate sled traffic, this sled feels like it is barely absorbing those type of bumps. It feels like the skid is bolted directly to the seat with no shocks. With my butt on the seat, I can feel every bump directly in my lower back. It is borderline jarring to one's back. Not comfortable at all, and the rider feels it is necessary to provide their own ride comfort by slightly rising their behind off the seat using their legs. This gets tiring very quickly.

Switch to the type of trail that has big dips and heaves. This Nytro will hit one of those and absorb it, again, with nowhere near the plushness of my Mono-equipped Vector, but will take it...then when it comes across the next bump, it will just crash all the way through the travel as if someone had just released all the pressure from both shocks in the skid. And the bottoming is not pleasant. This experience ends hard and harsh, and if the rider is not prepared for the impact, is legitimately painful.

The owner had back surgery three years ago - not from the Nytro - but, in hindsight, who knows - and just can't take the jarring, nearly teeth-rattling ride of the Nytro on the small and moderate bumps, and the unpredictable bottoming on larger bumps. He loves the engine, the power, how it handles (equipped with Curve skis), and the seating position. He just can't understand why it rides this way while his 2004 REV rides so smoothly, despite the similarities in suspension design and riding position. He would love to keep the sled but doesn't think he can bear the ride any longer.

So, before he goes back to Ski Doo, please provide as thorough of an explanation as possible as what he should do with this suspension set up (again, already been revalved to softer settings by Pioneer with not much impact). He has already tinkered with the dials a little bit, but nothing is labeled, making it more difficult.
 
Call hygear had the same sled and replaced the front shocks with gytr's . I sent everything to hygear they set them perfect. i'm 6/4 250 i also added the torsion spacers . Well worth the money
 
He's up at camp tinkering with it right now...can't figure out which way is the correct way to turn the dials. In which position should you put your body...laying down on the left of the machine? He says depending upon your body position, which way is clockwise or counter clockwise is opposite. Not sure which is correct...?
 
There are little arrows on the knobs. Clockwise is always like your looking at the knob from straight on.
 
The rtx sleds are stiff and they don't do the studders well at all. I had mine done at Pioneer too and it really ddidn't seems like it did anything for ride. Was disappointed as I too wanted better studder bump complacency. The revalve did nothing I feel, but I haven't had a bunch of time on it yet. Just keep playing with the adjustments but it will never ride like the mono.
 
Try the torsion springs on soft and adjust the shock to take the hits.

The springs are just to hold the sled up. It is fine if it drops an inch or so when he sits on it.

hygear does wonders with shocks, i just had the rears done for mine with a dual rate spring and it is pretty amazing what it did. I like a stiff ride though, a good thorough read thru the manual about the shock adjustments will help ya out.
 
Sounds like the rebound is set too slow.
